Size sets the base, and roofing is the Arvada example worth knowing. A full tear-off on a typical ranch house produces enough shingle weight that a 10-yard or 15-yard is usually the right answer even though the pile looks like it needs a 20.

Size by volume, then sanity-check the weight. Prime Dumpster carries five sizes from 10 to 40 yards.
The 10-Yard Dumpster is the smallest and fits the short driveways common in older Arvada neighborhoods. It suits a bathroom, a small deck teardown, or a single-layer roof, and it is the right pick for concrete, brick, and block.
The 15-Yard Dumpster covers a garage or basement clearing, a kitchen tear-out, or a larger roof job. It is the practical step up when a 10-yard will clearly fill.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the common choice for a whole-house cleanout or a remodel across several rooms. It needs about 22 feet of clear driveway, so measure first.
The 30-Yard Dumpster handles a basement finish plus a kitchen, a large addition, or a new build where volume climbs quickly across mixed materials.

On private property, including your own driveway or an off-street job site, Arvada does not require a placement permit for the container. That is where most Arvada containers go.
Public ground is a different matter and there are two separate rules. First, obstructing or encumbering any street, alley, sidewalk, or public ground in Arvada requires a permit from the City Manager. Second, and this one has no permit route at all, construction that blocks a curb, gutter, or sidewalk on a public right-of-way is expressly prohibited. So a placement that leaves the curb line and walk clear can be permitted; one that blocks them cannot.
There is also a gate on the permit itself that surprises homeowners. Arvada only issues right-of-way permits to contractors who already hold a city license, so a permit is not something a property owner can simply pick up. Municipal Contractors can be reached at 720-898-7640 and Building Contractors at 720-898-7620, both at 8101 Ralston Road.
Two more things apply citywide. Arvada requires a business license of any business that comes into the city to sell, lease, rent, deliver, or install property, and those licenses are free and do not expire. The city also licenses companies that collect waste, recycling, or compostable material, issued through the City Clerk at 720-898-7546. Most building and cleanout debris is fine. The exclusions come from Colorado's statewide list and from the city's own handling rules.
Colorado keeps a short, specific list of materials prohibited from disposal at a solid waste site or facility. It covers lead-acid batteries, used oil, liquid wastes or wastes containing free liquids unless the facility is specifically approved for them, waste tires, and waste electronic devices and computers. The electronics rule catches people clearing out a basement, so pull televisions, monitors, and old computers before you start loading.
Hazardous waste is not collected at all. Arvada's code states plainly that hazardous waste as defined by federal or state law is not subject to collection and has to go to an authorized facility instead. Paint, solvents, and fuel fall in that group. Asbestos needs a licensed abatement contractor rather than a container.
One city rule also shapes how a job site has to run. Arvada requires construction and demolition contractors to keep on-site waste containers and to have loose debris, scrap building material, and other trash containerized by the end of each day, with the number of containers set by the size of the job. If you are unsure about a single item, ask your account manager before it goes in.

Arvada's code sets the destination by class rather than by name. A licensed hauler has to take all collected waste to a disposal site approved by the state, and the code says plainly that no waste may be disposed of at any other location, inside or outside the city. The hauler carries sole responsibility for that disposal.
For the items a container cannot take, Arvada residents have a specific route. The Rooney Road Recycling Center at 151 S. Rooney Road in Golden takes household hazardous waste, and the state lists Arvada among the communities whose residents may use it. The number is 303-316-6262, drop-offs run by appointment, and Arvada residents get a discount with proof of residency. Jefferson County and its municipalities contribute to the center's operating costs, which is why it is open to Arvada in the first place.
It will not take everything, though. Radioactive material, biological and medical waste, and controlled prescription medicines all have to go elsewhere. Your account manager can confirm which facility is receiving your container load and what the gate will charge before delivery.
