What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

The base of every rental is simple. We deliver a container, you have it for the rental period, and then we collect it and haul the contents to a licensed facility. Your project details shape everything else in the quote.

Those details are the container size, what you're throwing away, how long you keep it and where the work is. For heavy loads like concrete, a 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster keeps weight in check. A 20-yard covers a typical renovation, and a 30-yard or 40-yard dumpster is built for demolition and big cleanouts. Extra rental days add to the cost.

Delaware works differently from most states. One state agency, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), runs three landfills and three transfer stations and applies a single fee schedule at every gate. That means your county doesn't change the tipping fee. What changes it is the material in the load and how far the truck travels.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • At every DSWA landfill, including Cherry Island in Wilmington and Jones Crossroads near Georgetown, household trash and construction debris are charged the same per-ton rate. Delaware's user fee schedule sets that rate for the whole state.
  • The same DSWA fee schedule charges several times the standard rate per ton for tires once a load holds more than four passenger tires. A flat special fee also applies to any load where yard waste mixed with trash makes up over 10% of the load.

For planning, that makes sorting more important than location. Keep yard waste and tires out, and a Delaware load stays on the standard rate wherever it goes.

The DSWA publishes its user fees on its official site, so check them before you plan. Your account manager can tell you which facility will serve your job and explain every part of your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Delaware?

On private property, such as a driveway or a contractor's staging lot, a dumpster normally needs no permit. Putting one on a street, sidewalk or shoulder changes that. You'll need permission from the government responsible for the road before the container is dropped.

In Delaware, the road outside your door is usually a state road. Which authority applies depends on who maintains it:

  • The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) maintains 89% of the state's road miles, far above the national share. State law treats obstructing a public road as an offense, and DelDOT can remove obstructions from the roadside clear zone, so check with DelDOT before placing anything on a state-maintained road.
  • Inside Newark, the Public Works and Water Resources Department handles work in city streets through a Right-of-Way Obstruction Permit, applied for online with a flat application fee on the city's fee schedule. The department's number is 302-366-7000.

Wilmington, Dover and Middletown each run their own permit offices. Your account manager can confirm who controls your street and find the right permit contact before your delivery goes on the schedule.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Delaware

Everyday cleanout and construction debris is generally fine for a Delaware dumpster. The limits come from DSWA's regulations and facility permits, which follow rules from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

DSWA facilities won't take hazardous waste, explosives, infectious or radioactive waste, or waste generated outside Delaware. DNREC also says yard waste may not be thrown out with trash or in Delaware landfills. Businesses can't landfill any hazardous waste either, including very small quantity generators.

As in every state, standard landfills refuse hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos unless special arrangements are made. Friable asbestos must be handled under DSWA's special procedures and charged separately.

The DSWA can make a driver unload for inspection. If prohibited waste turns up, the hauler gets a few hours to remove the whole load, or DSWA arranges removal at the hauler's cost. Tires, appliances and other special solid wastes need DSWA approval before delivery.

Unsure about electronics, tires, appliances or anything else? Talk to your account manager about where each item should go before loading day.

Delaware Landfill Disposal Sites

Delaware disposal is organized statewide. The DSWA runs one landfill in each county, and the one your load reaches mostly depends on where the project is.

Cherry Island Landfill sits at 1706 East 12th St. in Wilmington and serves New Castle County. It's open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closing earlier on Saturday than the other two.

Sandtown Landfill is at 1107 Willow Grove Rd. in Felton, serving Kent County. Down south, Jones Crossroads Landfill is at 28560 Landfill Lane in Georgetown. Both are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For special waste questions, the DSWA Citizens' Response Line is 1-800-404-7080.

DNREC permits and inspects Delaware's landfills and transfer stations. When you book, your account manager confirms the DSWA site for your address and any material limits you need to know about.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Delaware?

A standard five-day dumpster rental in Delaware is generally $399–$499 for a 10-yard container and $699–$899 for a 40-yard. What you finally pay depends on container size, debris type and the DSWA landfill that takes the load. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Delaware?

Not from the state. Your own driveway usually needs nothing. A public road does need permission, and since DelDOT maintains most Delaware roads, start there, or with the city for a local street such as Newark's Right-of-Way Obstruction Permit. Your account manager can find the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Delaware?

Hazardous waste, explosives, infectious or radioactive waste, free liquids, friable asbestos and yard waste are kept out of Delaware landfills. Waste from outside Delaware is refused too. If a prohibited item turns up at inspection, the hauler may have to remove the entire load.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Delaware county to the next?

It mostly doesn't at the landfill. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority charges one statewide rate at all its sites. Differences come from haul distance, the material in the load and extra fees for tires or yard waste mixed into trash.

Can I put tires in a Delaware dumpster?

Only with approval. The DSWA treats used tires as special solid waste that needs its sign-off, and a load with more than four passenger tires is charged a much higher per-ton rate. Set them aside and ask your account manager how to handle them.

Does Delaware charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Delaware's disposal fees come from a state agency. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority sets one user fee schedule for all its landfills and transfer stations, so the state effectively sets the per-ton charge. Your account manager can explain how that rate shows up in your quote.
