Dumpster Rental in Hawaii

Prime Dumpster offers dumpster rental in Hawaii, starting with Honolulu and the communities around it on Oahu. We deliver containers for home clean-outs and remodels, commercial construction and government and federal projects, and you can see every market we cover in our service area directory.

Island logistics shape your price more than they would on the mainland. Container size, the type of debris, where the dumpster sits and the county facility that accepts the load all play a part.

This page walks through Hawaii price ranges, permit steps, disposal limits and the county landfill details that affect a project on the islands.

What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Each rental covers delivery, the days the container stays with you, and the trip to disposal when you're finished. The base service is the same everywhere, and your project details fill in the rest of the quote.

The main details are the size you pick, the debris you're getting rid of, the length of the rental and the job location. A 10-yard dumpster or 15-yard dumpster suits heavy material like concrete and tile, while a 20-yard, 30-yard or 40-yard dumpster handles bulkier debris. Heavy loads and extra days both raise the price.

Hawaii has no cities in the mainland sense. Each of the four counties runs its own disposal system and sets its own tipping fees, and those fees are part of your quote. The biggest differences here come from which island you're on and whether green waste or recyclable material is kept separate.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • On the Big Island, Hawaii County charges $128.00 per ton at its landfill and reload facility, but only $32.00 per ton for green waste that businesses separate out. Loads taken to the Hilo reload facility pay another $26.00 per ton on top.
  • On Oahu, the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill takes only small amounts of inert material such as dirt, concrete and tile. It turns away combustible waste, bulky items, tires and appliances, and commercial haulers need a city account to use it.

The takeaway is that sorting matters on every island. Separated green waste can cost far less on the Big Island, and on Oahu a mixed remodeling load can't go to the landfill at all.

Check current fees and rules on each county's official page. Your account manager can confirm which facility serves your address and explain what will shape your final price.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Hawaii?

You typically won't need a permit when the dumpster sits on your own driveway or inside a private lot. Putting it on a street, sidewalk or shoulder changes that. The agency responsible for the road must approve it before the container arrives.

Hawaii splits roads between the state and the counties, so the permit office depends on the road in front of your project:

  • On a state highway, the Hawaii Department of Transportation issues an Application and Permit for the Occupancy and Use of State Highway Right-of-Way through its district offices. Application fees for these permits have been waived since July 8, 2026, until further notice. The Oahu District line is 808-831-6700 ext. 123.
  • On a Honolulu city street, the Department of Transportation Services requires a Street Usage Permit for work that temporarily blocks part of a roadway or sidewalk. You apply five to 30 days ahead, and blocking a metered space adds a daily parking meter fee. The Street Usage Section is at 808-768-8387, open 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Maui, Kauai and Hawaii County each handle their own county roads. If you're unsure who controls your street, your account manager will find the right contact before delivery.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Hawaii

Most debris from a home or job site can go straight into the container. What gets refused depends on what each county facility is permitted to take, and those permits follow rules from the Hawaii Department of Health.

State law keeps used lead-acid batteries out of mixed household trash, so car and truck batteries need to go back to a retailer or a permitted collection site. State landfill rules also require operators to screen out regulated hazardous waste and PCB waste.

As with landfills across the U.S., hazardous waste and bulk liquids aren't allowed, and friable asbestos needs a facility specially approved for it.

County sites add their own limits, and on Oahu they're strict. Waimanalo Gulch won't take tires, auto batteries, appliances, scrap metal, bulky items or anything that burns. Hawaii County asks you to pull out scrap metal, green waste and other recyclables before a load reaches its landfill or reload facility.

If your project includes electronics, tires, appliances or anything you're unsure about, talk to your account manager before loading, and they'll tell you where each item should go.

Hawaii Landfill Disposal Sites

Disposal in Hawaii is run county by county, and each island has its own facilities. The site that takes your load depends on the island and the part of it where you're working.

The Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill at 92-460 Farrington Highway in Kapolei is Oahu's municipal landfill. It's open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed only on Christmas and New Year's Day, and it limits what it accepts to small quantities of inert material.

On the Big Island, the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill at 71-1111 Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway receives waste from across the island, including loads trucked over from the East Hawaii Reload Facility in Hilo. It's open Monday through Saturday.

On Maui, the Central Maui Landfill at Pulehu Rd. and Hansen Rd. in Puunene takes refuse and construction debris, Monday through Saturday. Businesses and commercial haulers need a county commercial account.

The Hawaii Department of Health permits every landfill in the state. When you book, your account manager confirms the receiving facility for your address and any material limits there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Hawaii?

A standard five-day dumpster rental in Hawaii generally runs $399–$499 for a 10-yard container and $699–$899 for a 40-yard. Your total depends on the container size, the type of debris you load and the county landfill or facility that accepts it. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Hawaii?

Not from the state for private property. A dumpster on your driveway usually needs nothing, but one on a public road does. HDOT handles state highways, and each county handles its own streets, such as Honolulu's Department of Transportation Services. Your account manager can find the right office for you.

What can't go in a dumpster in Hawaii?

Lead-acid batteries, hazardous waste, PCB waste, bulk liquids and friable asbestos stay out of Hawaii landfills. On Oahu, the landfill also refuses tires, appliances, scrap metal and combustible debris. Loading any of these can get a container refused, so set them aside first.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Hawaii county to the next?

Each county runs its own disposal system and sets its own fees. Hawaii County charges far less for separated green waste than for landfill trash, while Oahu's landfill accepts only inert material. The island, the facility and what you load all change your disposal cost.

Can I put tires in a Hawaii dumpster?

It's best to keep tires out. Oahu's landfill doesn't accept them, and other county sites often handle tires separately from general debris. Set them aside and ask your account manager where they should go before the container is filled.

Does Hawaii charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

The tipping fees on a Hawaii load are set by each county, which is why Hawaii County, Maui and Oahu charge so differently. Your account manager can confirm which facility serves your address, what it charges and whether any added surcharge applies to your load.
