Dumpster Rental in Maine

Prime Dumpster provides dumpster rental in Maine across 9 Maine cities, including Portland, Lewiston and Bangor, plus the towns nearby. We set down containers for attic clean-outs, camp and cottage renovations, roof replacements and ground-up construction. Commercial crews and federal jobs are welcome as well.

Maine prices move with a few local factors. Container size, the debris you're getting rid of, whether the container needs street space and the disposal site that accepts your load each play a role.

Here you'll find Maine price ranges, permit basics, disposal rules and the landfill details worth knowing before you book.

What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Every rental price covers the same core job. We deliver the container, give you the rental period to fill it and then carry the full load off. What changes from one quote to the next is the project around it.

Four details matter most: the size you choose, the materials going in, the length of your rental and the site address. A 10-yard dumpster fits a single-room project, and a 30-yard dumpster suits a whole-house cleanout. Plaster, stone and old roofing add tons quickly. Keeping the container longer adds to the bill too.

The site matters because Maine's landfills and recycling facilities each set their own tipping fees, and your quote reflects them. Here, the biggest swing comes from how well a load is sorted. Mixed debris costs far more per ton than a clean load of a single material.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • Riverside Recycling in Portland charges $195.00 per ton for non-recyclable or mixed material loads. Clean roofing shingles cost $170.00 per ton, and inert materials such as brick, stone and small concrete cost $50.00 per ton.
  • The Tri-Community Landfill in Fort Fairfield, run by Aroostook Waste Solutions, charges $113.50 per ton for demolition debris loads over 200 lbs, with a $10 minimum fee for smaller loads.

Put simply, a mixed load in Greater Portland costs nearly four times as much per ton as clean brick and stone. Pulling masonry out of a remodel load is one of the easiest ways to keep disposal costs down. Rates in Aroostook County follow a different schedule altogether.

Fees are updated from time to time, so confirm them on the facility's official page. Your account manager can confirm which site takes debris from your address and go over everything that shapes your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Maine?

When the container stays on private property, such as your driveway or yard, you normally won't need a permit. It's another matter if the container has to sit on a public street or sidewalk. Then the town or agency in charge of that road needs to approve it before delivery.

Maine handles this locally, and the right office depends on the road:

  • On state and state-aid highways, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) controls the right-of-way. Inside the urban compact areas of larger towns, the municipality takes charge of those roads instead, and county commissioners oversee the remaining public ways. Blocking traffic on any public way and refusing a police order to clear it is a Class E crime under state law.
  • In Portland, the Public Works department runs permits online. Its permit types include street occupancy and sidewalk occupancy permits, and the charges appear on the city's permit fee schedule.

Other Maine towns may send you to a public works office, a code office or the town clerk. Your account manager can find out who issues permission for your street and pass along the contact before your delivery date.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Maine

Most debris from a cleanout or building project goes into a dumpster with no issues. What's excluded comes down to each disposal site's state license, and those licenses follow rules from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Maine law bans two common household items from the trash. It's illegal to throw away cathode ray tubes and LCD screens, which covers old TVs, monitors, laptops and tablets. Knowingly placing a mercury-added product in trash headed for disposal is also against the law, and that reaches thermostats, fluorescent lamps and some switches.

Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are shut out of ordinary landfills here, as in every state. Asbestos needs a facility that holds a special license for it.

Each facility adds its own limits. The Tri-Community Landfill in Fort Fairfield doesn't accept hazardous or liquid wastes, though it takes certain special wastes such as non-friable asbestos after a call ahead. Riverside Recycling charges separate item fees for mattresses, appliances, tires and electronics.

If your load might include electronics, tires, appliances or anything else you're unsure about, check with your account manager about where it should go before the container fills.

Maine Landfill Disposal Sites

Maine disposal runs through regional recycling centers, municipal landfills and private operators. The facility your debris goes to depends on the town where your project is located.

Riverside Recycling at 910 Riverside St. in Portland handles construction debris, bulky items and other materials for the Greater Portland area. It's open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and you can call 207-797-6200.

The Hatch Hill Solid Waste Facility at 112 Hatch Hill Road in Augusta serves Augusta and a group of contracted towns. It's open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and vehicles need a valid Hatch Hill permit.

In the far north, the Tri-Community Landfill sits at 303 Murphy Road in Fort Fairfield. It's open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection licenses each landfill and decides the types of waste it can take. Your account manager checks the facility assigned to your address at booking and lets you know about any material rules in place there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Maine?

In Maine, a standard five-day rental typically costs $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster and $699–$899 for a 40-yard. Your price depends on the container size, the kind of debris and the landfill or recycling site that receives it. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Maine?

Not from the state. A container in your own driveway or yard usually needs no permit. Placing one on a public street does, through MaineDOT on state highways outside urban compact areas or through the town on local streets. Your account manager can help you reach the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Maine?

Maine bans TVs, monitors and other devices with CRTs or LCD screens from the trash, along with mercury-added products like thermostats and fluorescent lamps. Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are excluded too. A facility can refuse a load that holds any of them.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Maine county to the next?

Every facility sets its own rates. Riverside Recycling in Portland charges far more for mixed debris than for clean brick and stone. The Tri-Community Landfill in Aroostook County uses its own separate demolition debris rate. Sorting and location both change what disposal costs.

Can I put tires in a Maine dumpster?

It's better to keep them separate. Maine facilities usually price tires on their own, either per tire or by weight, instead of mixing them into your debris tonnage. Set tires aside and ask your account manager where they should go before the container is loaded.

Does Maine charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Yes. State law requires landfills to pay the Department of Environmental Protection a per-ton fee on municipal solid waste and construction debris, with an extra per-ton fee on construction debris. Landfills usually pass it into their rates, and your account manager can explain how it affects your load.
