What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Three parts make up every rental: we deliver the dumpster, you get the agreed number of days to fill it, and we remove it and take the load to a disposal site. On top of that sit the details of your job.

The size you pick is the starting point. After that come the kind of debris, the length of the rental and the address. Concrete, dirt and roofing shingles pile on weight fast, and each extra day on site adds to the total.

Maryland counties, cities and regional authorities each run their own disposal sites and set their own tipping fees. A roll-off full of building debris is often charged more per ton than a load of household trash.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • Montgomery County's Shady Grove Transfer Station charges $70.00 per ton for trash loads of 500 pounds or more. Construction material and open-top roll-off boxes cost $105.00 per ton.
  • Carroll County's Northern Landfill charges $70 per ton for municipal waste and $85 per ton for construction and demolition waste, with an $8 minimum.

Both counties charge the same for trash, yet a roll-off of remodel debris costs noticeably more at Shady Grove. Where your job sits can shift the disposal part of your quote even between neighboring counties.

Baltimore City's Department of Public Works has noted that tipping fees across Maryland range from $66 to $200 per ton, and that many local landfills limit use to residents. Check the county's official page before you plan around a rate. Your account manager can tell you which site serves your address and walk you through the costs in your quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Maryland?

A dumpster on a private driveway or lot in Maryland usually goes in without a permit. When it has to sit on a public street or sidewalk, you'll need approval from the agency that owns that road, and it's smart to get it well before delivery day.

Maryland splits this by road owner, so the office depends on the street in front of your job:

  • On a state highway, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration issues a District Office Level Access Permit for any work in its right-of-way. Maryland's permit portal lists no application cost and an approval time of 1 to 3 days, and the permit line is (410) 545-0368.
  • On a county road in Montgomery County, the Department of Permitting Services issues dumpster permits, usually within 1-2 weeks of submittal. The county's permit doesn't cover city or homeowner association rules, so those need their own approval.

Baltimore City charges a weekly fee for a dumpster in the right-of-way through its transportation permit office. Other towns set their own terms, so your account manager can find the right contact for your street before the dumpster is scheduled.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Maryland

Household clutter and building debris can almost always go in the dumpster. What gets turned away depends on what each landfill or transfer station is permitted to accept, under rules from the Maryland Department of the Environment.

Tires are the big state-level ban. Maryland banned tires from landfill disposal in 1994, so they can't be mixed into a load of regular trash. In Frederick County, tires go to a separate collection area for recycling instead. Separately collected yard waste is also kept out of disposal sites, and rubble landfills refuse paint, solvents, tar, caulking and adhesives.

Hazardous waste and free liquids are banned from normal landfills in every state, and friable asbestos can only go to a site approved to take it.

Some sites set extra rules. Montgomery County's Shady Grove Transfer Station turns away commercial mattresses entirely unless they come with a residential manifest showing same-day collection inside the county.

If your cleanup includes electronics, tires, appliances or anything you're not sure about, check with your account manager on where it should go before you start filling the dumpster.

Maryland Landfill Disposal Sites

Maryland's disposal network mixes county landfills, transfer stations and regional systems shared by several counties. The county where your project sits sets which one takes the waste.

The Reichs Ford Road Landfill and Recycling Center is at 9031 Reichs Ford Road in Frederick. Its drop-off site is open Monday through Saturday, and it collects tires separately for recycling.

The Shady Grove Transfer Station serves Montgomery County. Trucks use the entrance at 16055 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg, while residents use 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood. It is open seven days a week.

On the Eastern Shore, the Midshore Regional Solid Waste System serves four counties through the Midshore II facility in Ridgely and the Midshore I Transfer Station in Easton.

The Maryland Department of the Environment issues the permits that let these sites operate. Once you book, your account manager confirms the site for your address and any limits on what it takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Maryland?

Expect $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster up to $699–$899 for a 40-yard in Maryland, based on a standard five-day rental. The final number depends on the size you choose, the type of debris and the county landfill or transfer station that receives it. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Maryland?

Not from the state. A dumpster in your driveway usually needs no permit. On a public road, approval comes from the road owner, which is the State Highway Administration on a state route or your county or city on local streets. Your account manager can identify the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Maryland?

Tires, hazardous waste, liquids, friable asbestos and separately collected yard waste. Rubble landfills also refuse paint, solvents and adhesives, and some sites turn away commercial mattresses, so one wrong item can cause trouble for a full load.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Maryland county to the next?

Each county sets its own disposal rates. Montgomery County charges more per ton for roll-off boxes of construction material than Carroll County charges for construction waste. The site your debris goes to changes what the load costs.

Can I put tires in a Maryland dumpster?

No. Maryland has banned tires from landfills since 1994, and counties like Frederick collect them apart from trash for recycling. Keep them out of the dumpster and ask your account manager where they should go before loading starts.

Does Maryland charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Maryland disposal charges come from the county, city or regional authority that runs each site, and Baltimore City adds its own disposal fee on top of its tipping fee. Your account manager can confirm what the facility serving your address charges.
