What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Your rental includes three basic parts: we deliver the container, you use it for the rental period, and we come back to haul it off. Everything else in the quote comes from your project.

Container size matters first. A 10-yard dumpster fits a garage cleanout, and a 20-yard dumpster covers many roofing jobs, while a 30-yard or 40-yard dumpster takes on larger remodels and demolition. The debris type, the rental length and your location also count. Brick, block and dirt get heavy fast, and extra days mean extra cost.

The landfill matters too, because each West Virginia disposal site posts its own tipping fees, and that cost goes into your quote. In this state, the posted rate may or may not include state fees, and sites price tires and appliances separately.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority landfill in Beckley bases its fees on $47.03 per ton. That rate includes the state solid waste assessment fee of $8.25 per ton, and a small truck load carries a $12.00 minimum.
  • The Northwestern Landfill in Wood County near Parkersburg charges $44 per ton and accepts any items other than paint or hazardous waste. It adds separate fees for tires and appliances that contain freon.

The two headline rates look close, but they aren't always measured the same way. Tires, freon appliances and yard waste are priced on their own, so pulling those items out of a load keeps the per-ton charge predictable.

Rates change, so check the county or authority's official page before you plan around a number. Your account manager can confirm which landfill serves your area and walk you through what will shape your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in West Virginia?

Dumpsters kept on your own property, such as a driveway or private lot, don't usually need a permit. A spot on the street, sidewalk or curb is a different matter. That calls for approval from whoever maintains the road, and you should secure it before the container is delivered.

In West Virginia, your permit office depends on who maintains the road:

  • On a state route, the West Virginia Division of Highways handles work in its right-of-way through Encroachment Permit Form MM-109. You file it with the district or county permit office where the work will happen, or through the WVDOT Permit Portal.
  • On a Morgantown city street, the Engineering Department issues a permit for construction or blockage of the public right-of-way. The permit covers the street, sidewalk or curb for no more than 30 days, and metered spaces must be cleared with the Morgantown Parking Authority. The city's permit office number is 304-284-7412.

The form lists no fee, but ask about one when you apply. If you're not sure who maintains your street, your account manager can find the right contact ahead of delivery.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in West Virginia

Most debris from homes and job sites can go right in. Restrictions come mainly from what each landfill's permit allows, and those permits follow rules set by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

West Virginia law names four items that can't go to a landfill. Lead-acid batteries are banned, and so are tires outside state cleanup programs. Yard waste, including grass, leaves, brush and tree trimmings, can only go to a site built to compost or reuse it. TVs, computers and other screens larger than four inches are banned too, wherever the county or regional waste authority has a cost-effective recycling option. Load a car battery or a pile of brush and you risk having the container turned away.

Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are barred from standard landfills across the country. Asbestos has to go to a facility with a permit for it.

Individual sites add rules. The Mountaineer Transfer Station, which handles waste from the Morgantown area, doesn't accept tires. The Northwestern Landfill in Wood County refuses paint.

When your project includes electronics, tires, appliances or anything you aren't sure about, ask your account manager where to take it before it goes in the dumpster.

West Virginia Landfill Disposal Sites

West Virginia disposal runs through county solid waste authorities, commercial landfills and transfer stations. The site for your load depends on where your project sits.

The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority landfill is at 200 Fernandez Dr in Beckley. It's open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. The office line is 304-255-9335.

The Northwestern Landfill sits at 510 E. Dry Run Road in Parkersburg. Hours are 7AM-4PM Monday through Friday, with a shorter Saturday morning, and the number is 304-428-0602.

The Mountaineer Transfer Station is at 2130 Rail Street in the Morgantown Industrial Park in Westover. Republic Services owns and runs it, and it collects waste before it's hauled to a landfill.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection permits landfills and transfer stations statewide. Your account manager confirms the facility for your address at booking, along with any material limits it sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in West Virginia?

A West Virginia dumpster rental generally costs $399–$499 for a 10-yard container and $699–$899 for a 40-yard, based on a standard five-day rental. The size, the type of debris and the county landfill that takes it all affect the total. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in West Virginia?

Not from the state. A dumpster in your driveway usually needs no permit. A container on a public road does, through the Division of Highways on a state route or the city, such as Morgantown's Engineering Department, on a local street. Your account manager can find the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in West Virginia?

Hazardous waste, free liquids, friable asbestos, lead-acid batteries, tires, yard waste and, where the county has a recycling option, TVs and computers. Some sites also refuse paint. Because these bans are written into state law, one car battery or a load of brush can get the whole container turned away.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one West Virginia county to the next?

Each landfill sets its own tipping fees and decides what the posted rate covers. Raleigh County's rate includes the state assessment fee, while Wood County's Northwestern Landfill posts a single per-ton price and charges extra for tires and freon appliances. Those differences add up on a full load.

Can I put tires in a West Virginia dumpster?

No. State law makes it unlawful to dispose of tires in a West Virginia landfill, apart from state-run cleanup programs. Some transfer stations refuse them entirely. Keep tires out of your container and ask your account manager about a tire collection option.

Does West Virginia charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Yes. West Virginia charges assessment fees on each ton of waste disposed at its landfills, collected by the operator from the person disposing of the waste. Raleigh County, for example, includes the state assessment in its posted rate. Your account manager can explain how it applies to your load.
