What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Each quote starts from one basic service. We place the container at your address, you load it through the rental period, and we pick it up and take it for disposal. On top of that, several job details decide the price.

The main ones are container size, the type of debris, how many days you need and where the job sits. A 10-yard dumpster handles a bathroom or a small cleanout, while a 20-yard dumpster takes on most whole-floor remodels. Masonry and wet plaster reach weight limits fast, and a longer rental costs more.

Disposal adds its own layer, because each Rhode Island facility sets tipping fees and those fees are built into your quote. In this state, two things stand out: whether debris comes from a resident or a business, and which town's transfer station takes it.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • The Westerly Transfer Station charges $145 per ton for residential demolition debris. Commercial demolition loads and debris from non-residents cost $165 per ton.
  • The Bristol Transfer Station takes construction and demolition debris for $100 per ton, or $10 for each 200 pounds.

What this shows is that Rhode Island town facilities can be tens of dollars per ton apart. Where you're working and who's hauling can matter as much as how much debris you have.

Look up current fees on the town or facility's official page before planning around them. Your account manager can tell you which facility will take your load and walk through the pieces of your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Rhode Island?

A container set on private property, like your driveway or a business lot, typically needs no permit. A container on a city street, sidewalk or public parking space is another story. It needs sign-off from whichever government maintains that road, arranged before the truck arrives.

Rhode Island has no county government, so every street belongs to either the state or one of its 39 cities and towns. Which one you deal with depends on the road:

  • On a state highway, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) controls the right-of-way. Changes within it require a RIDOT Physical Alteration Permit, which comes with an application fee and a bond or other security. Applications go to RIDOT's Maintenance Division.
  • On a Providence street, the Department of Public Works handles containers. Its permit forms include a Temporary Dumpster or Pod Permit and a Yearly Dumpster Permit, and permits are issued online once the permit fee is paid. The DPW office line is 401-680-7500.

Each town writes its own rules, and some post a separate dumpster policy through public works. Your account manager can figure out which office covers your street and get the contact details to you before delivery.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Rhode Island

Nearly all household and renovation debris is fine to load. The limits are set by what each facility's license allows, and those licenses follow rules from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

Electronics are the firmest ban. Computers, monitors and TVs with screens over nine inches must be recycled, and no landfill or transfer station in the state may accept them for disposal. State rules also keep carpeting, furniture, appliances, tires and fluorescent lights out of construction and demolition debris, so a house cleanout load is often handled as general solid waste instead.

As with any landfill in the country, hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are not accepted with regular trash. Asbestos must go to a site specially permitted for it.

Facilities add their own conditions. The Westerly Transfer Station accepts demolition debris, wood, sheetrock, plaster and shingles, but no metal mixed into those loads. Mattresses, Freon units and tires there must go on the scale.

Not sure about electronics, tires, appliances or any other item? Ask your account manager where it should go before it ends up in the container.

Rhode Island Landfill Disposal Sites

Rhode Island's disposal system centers on one state corporation, backed by a ring of town transfer stations. The facility that takes your load depends on the town and on the type of material.

The Central Landfill is run by Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation at 34 Shun Pike in Johnston. It's open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to noon, and you can reach it at 401-942-1430. Its fee schedule sets a lower rate for clean concrete, asphalt, brick and rock than for solid waste.

The Westerly Transfer Station sits at 39 Larry Hirsch Lane in Westerly, off Route 91. It's open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and its phone is 401-348-2557.

The Department of Environmental Management licenses every solid waste facility in Rhode Island. Your account manager confirms the facility for your address at booking and flags any material rules it enforces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Rhode Island?

A standard five-day rental in Rhode Island usually runs $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster and $699–$899 for a 40-yard. The size you choose, the debris you load and the disposal facility that accepts it all shape the final price. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Rhode Island?

Not from the state. A container on your driveway or private lot usually doesn't need one. A container on a public road does, from RIDOT on a state highway or from the city or town on a local street, such as Providence's Temporary Dumpster or Pod Permit. Your account manager can find the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Rhode Island?

Covered electronics such as computers, monitors and TVs can't go to any Rhode Island landfill or transfer station. Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are also excluded. Carpeting, furniture, appliances and tires can't travel as construction debris, which can change how and where a load is charged.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Rhode Island county to the next?

Rhode Island has no county government, so rates change from town to town instead. Westerly charges businesses and non-residents more than residents for demolition debris, and Bristol uses its own lower per-ton rate. The facility serving your job decides what disposal costs.

Can I put tires in a Rhode Island dumpster?

Better not. State rules keep tires out of construction debris, and Rhode Island facilities charge for tires on their own, often per tire. Bristol, for example, prices car and truck tires individually. Pull them from the load and ask your account manager where they should go.

Does Rhode Island charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Rhode Island's own disposal corporation, Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, sets the Central Landfill's rates. State law also makes it add a per-vehicle surcharge on loads other than municipal trash, and that money goes to the Town of Johnston. Your account manager can explain how these charges affect your quote.
