Nestled in the lush rolling hills of Southwestern Ohio, Springfield is a vibrant city with a rich history. Like a beacon on the horizon, its warm ambiance beckons locals and visitors alike to explore all it has to offer.
The city’s roots date back to 1801 when German immigrants settled there and named it Simms Settlement after their leader John Simms. The settlement was later renamed Springfield because of the numerous springs that surrounded it. Throughout its existence, the city has seen many businesses come and go such as a car manufacturing plant established by the Duryea brothers in 1904 which closed just sixteen years later due to financial difficulties. Despite this setback, Springfield persevered and now boasts one of the largest concentrations of industries in Clark County.
Springfield has also become home to several historical sites including Wittenberg University, founded in 1845; National Road Interpretive Site built around the 1830s; and Tecumseh Historic District featuring homes from the early 1800s through the mid-1900s. Visitors can immerse themselves in these unique places while learning about the area’s culture and heritage. From outdoor activities like camping at Buck Creek State Park or canoeing along Mad River to cultural attractions like Heritage Center Museum or Hartman Rock Garden, there are plenty of opportunities for exploration here.
