Everyday household and jobsite debris is fine. The restrictions come from New Mexico solid waste rules, which the New Mexico Environment Department enforces, and from the city landfill's own refusal list.
The Cerro Colorado Landfill turns away hazardous waste, infectious waste, liquid waste, radioactive waste, petroleum waste, septage and sewage, lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, and oil field waste. That rules out paint, solvents, fuel, antifreeze, car and tool batteries, propane cylinders, and anything that can pour or leak.
Some materials move only with advance approval and paperwork. Dewatered sludge, petroleum-contaminated soil, and industrial waste all need a sign-off from landfill staff first, often with lab results. Scrap tires need a state-approved manifest before they can be delivered.
Construction and demolition debris is handled under its own set of rules in Albuquerque, and the city keeps it out of the three public convenience centers along with roofing material, drywall, and carpet. For a remodel or a tear-out, that is one more reason to let us route the container rather than haul it yourself.
If you are unsure about a specific material, ask your account manager before it goes in the container and they will confirm how it has to be handled.
