What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Each rental is built on three steps. We deliver the container, you fill it during your rental period, and we pick it up and take it for disposal.

From there, the details of your project set the quote. Container size, debris type, rental length and job location count most. Wet drywall, roofing and concrete are heavy, and extra days on site add cost.

The landfill matters because each Louisiana parish or city landfill sets its own tipping fees, and those fees are part of your price. Here, residency and the kind of customer often matter as much as the debris itself. Many parish sites take household waste from residents at no charge but bill commercial loads by the ton.

Two examples of how parish disposal differs in practice:

  • Shreveport's Woolworth Road Landfill charges $43.26 per ton, with a $19.25 minimum for a half ton or less. Shreveport and Caddo Parish residents bringing residential waste pay $0.00.
  • Washington Parish's Choctaw Road Landfill takes household waste from parish residents at no charge and charges commercial loads $45.00 per ton.

For a contractor, the free resident rate usually won't apply. At the Jefferson Parish Landfill, debris from a rental, a new build or any property other than the hauler's own home is billed as commercial.

Always confirm fees on official parish or city pages. Your account manager can confirm the disposal site serving your area and explain what will affect your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Louisiana?

On private property, like your driveway or a job site, a dumpster usually doesn't need a permit. Placing it on a street, sidewalk or other public space is different. You'll need approval from whoever maintains that road before the container is dropped off.

Louisiana's environmental rules cover landfills, haulers and the people who generate waste, while street placement belongs to local government. Which office you deal with depends on the location:

  • Inside a city, the city sets the terms. New Orleans requires a Dumpster or Storage Container Permit for any container in public view in front of your property. There's an application fee plus a daily charge based on the curb space used, or meter rental in metered spots. The Traffic Division of the Department of Public Works handles it at 504-658-8040.
  • Outside city limits, the parish government usually controls local roads, so check with the parish before a container goes in the right-of-way.

New Orleans also requires the owner's name and phone number and yellow reflectors on every container placed on the street. Your account manager can find the right permit office and requirements for your address before delivery.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Louisiana

Most household junk and building debris can go in a dumpster. The real limits come from what each landfill is permitted to accept, under rules set by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

Landfill type decides a lot here. A Type III landfill, the kind built for construction debris and woodwaste, may not accept residential waste, commercial waste, liquids or anything that rots. State rules also say appliances, creosote-treated lumber and items that weren't part of the building don't count as construction debris. So furniture and household clutter pulled out of a gutted house can get a load turned away at a debris landfill.

Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos are barred from ordinary landfills, as they are nationwide. Asbestos has to go to a site approved for it.

Parish sites add their own limits. The Jefferson Parish Landfill doesn't accept appliances, tires, used automotive fluids, cooking oil, lead-acid batteries or electronics, and Shreveport's landfill turns away whole tires, batteries, waste oil and white goods.

If your project involves electronics, tires, appliances or anything you're not sure about, ask your account manager where it should go before you start filling the container.

Louisiana Landfill Disposal Sites

Louisiana disposal is handled by parish governments, cities and private operators, so the landfill that takes your load depends on where the job is.

The Jefferson Parish Landfill is at 5800 Highway 90 West in Waggaman, serving the West Bank and the rest of the parish. It's open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus Sunday mornings, and treats debris from any property other than the hauler's own home as commercial.

Shreveport's Woolworth Road Landfill sits at 10580 Woolworth Rd in Keithville. It operates under a state permit and is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays until 1 p.m.

East Baton Rouge Parish runs the North Landfill at 16001 Samuels Road in Zachary. It takes garbage and trash from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality permits every landfill by type and sets what each may accept. When you book, your account manager confirms the landfill for your address and any material limits that apply there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Louisiana?

Louisiana rentals generally cost $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster up to $699–$899 for a 40-yard, for a standard five-day rental. The price depends on container size, the debris you load and the parish landfill that receives it. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Louisiana?

Not from the state. A dumpster on your driveway or private lot usually needs no permit. One on a public street does, and the city handles that inside city limits, while the parish covers roads outside them. New Orleans, for example, requires its own container permit. Your account manager can find the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Louisiana?

Hazardous waste, free liquids, friable asbestos and unprocessed tires stay out of Louisiana landfills. Many parish sites also refuse batteries, appliances, electronics and oil, and construction debris landfills can't take household trash. Mixing these into your load can get it turned away, so ask first.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Louisiana county to the next?

Louisiana has parishes instead of counties, and each parish or city landfill sets its own fees. Shreveport charges most loads by the ton but lets local residents drop household waste free, while Washington Parish charges commercial loads a similar per-ton rate. Your account manager can confirm which site serves you.

Can I put tires in a Louisiana dumpster?

No. State rules prohibit putting unprocessed waste tires in any Louisiana landfill, and sites like the Jefferson Parish Landfill won't accept them. Keep tires separate and ask your account manager where they can go before the container is loaded.

Does Louisiana charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Louisiana disposal costs show up in the rates each parish, city or landfill operator posts, and those rates differ by site and by customer type. Your account manager can confirm which landfill serves your address and explain how its charges affect your quote.
