Westminster, Maryland is an inviting destination for those looking to explore a richly historic area. Set in the rolling hills of Carroll County, this charming city offers its inhabitants and visitors alike a unique opportunity to step back into America’s past. As you wander through the streets, it’s as if time stands still – allowing you to experience life from days gone by.
Dating back to 1764, Westminster was founded when William Winchester received a land grant from Lord Baltimore. Originally called ‘Winchester Town’, the name changed shortly after its establishment due to confusion with another town in Frederick County that had the same name. It wasn’t until 1818 that Westminster adopted its current name.
To celebrate its storied history, The Historical Society of Carroll County established the annual Heritage Festival which takes place every June at “the Hill”; a local park located on Main Street near City Hall. Here participants can enjoy craft demonstrations such as blacksmithing and candle making while others gather around musicians or take part in interactive educational activities provided by local historians eager to share their knowledge about community life over two centuries ago.
Westminster also boasts several impressive landmarks including the original clock tower built between 1908-1911 – now known as the Old Clock Tower Museum – which was recently reconstructed using many of its original materials. Also worth visiting are St John’s Roman Catholic Church (completed in 1842) and The Rose Garden (one of only three municipal rose gardens left in Maryland).
