Founded in 1715 by Lewis Morris of England, who had purchased the land from Native Americans two years prior, Morristown, New Jersey quickly developed into an important military hub during both the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras.
One can still visit many of the sites that were significant during those wars today. These include Ford Mansion, where General George Washington made his headquarters during the winter of 1779-1780; Jockey Hollow Encampment Site, which was used as a training ground for troops; and The Green, a public square established in 1804 that served as a gathering place for citizens throughout the centuries.
In addition to these historic attractions, modern-day Morristown offers plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment. With its numerous parks, trails, restaurants, and shopping districts there’s something here to suit every taste or interest. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape from city life or just trying to explore what your hometown has to offer, Morristown will not disappoint.
