The Town adds a rule of its own for events. Its special event packet says portable restrooms have to be provided unless you can show there are enough accessible public restrooms on site, and staff set the final number event by event. The Standard Porta Potty is the everyday unit. It has a toilet, a urinal, a paper holder, and hand sanitizer, and it handles job sites, yard work, and small get-togethers.
The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty is wider, with a flat entry, grab bars, and turning room for a wheelchair. Add at least one whenever guests arrive from outside your own circle.
The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty brings a flush and better odor control, which is what most couples want at a waterfront wedding.

On private ground, such as your own yard, a driveway, or a fenced job site, you generally won't need Town approval. Public ground is a different story.
Streets, sidewalks and easements: Work or placement in a Town right-of-way or drainage easement needs a Town encroachment permit from the Public Services Department at 100 Ann Edwards Lane. Insurance of at least a million dollars is part of it. Call the Town at 843-884-8517 before you commit to a curbside drop.
Which road is it? Some streets belong to the Town, some to the state, and others to Charleston County or a private owner. The Town's engineering and environmental team points residents to a street finder so they can tell. If the road turns out to be a state route, the encroachment permit comes from the state transportation department instead, and it carries no fee.
Events: Any organized gathering of more than 25 people that changes how public or commercial property is normally used counts as a special event here. Festivals and races want the application 90 days ahead, parades want 180 days, and the fee runs from $100 to $150 depending on the event type and length. Your site plan has to show where the units will stand, and everything must be off Town property within 24 hours of the finish.
Food vendors: An event coordinator files for food vendor approval with the state agriculture department, ideally two weeks out. Temporary food stands need a handwashing sink with hot and cold running water, and sanitizer alone won't satisfy that rule.

Keep units 15 feet or more from where food is served, and well clear of wells, ditches, and storm drains that run to the creeks. On a job site, put them within 200 feet of the work. At an event, break them into small clusters instead of one long line, and set the accessible unit on a hard, flat approach.
A standard rental includes a weekly visit to pump, clean, and restock. In South Carolina, the crew hauling that waste holds a state license to clean self-contained toilets, and the load can only go to an approved disposal site. Nothing may be released to the ground or into any waterway without a permit, which is why every tank leaves with the truck.
