What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

Three steps make up every rental. We deliver the container, you load it over the rental period, and we haul it off once you're finished. The details of your project build on that starting point.

Size matters most, then the debris you're getting rid of, the number of days on site and your project address. Plaster, brick and old shingles fill a container's weight allowance much faster than light cleanout junk. Keeping the dumpster longer also adds to the total.

Your county counts because each Michigan landfill or transfer station charges its own tipping fees, and that cost flows into your quote. Here, the unit matters as much as the rate. Most sites weigh a load, but some northern counties measure it by volume instead.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • Muskegon County charges $56.66 per ton at its landfill for household refuse and construction debris brought in by commercial roll-off trucks. Smaller loads at its transfer station pay $78.76 per ton above a minimum charge.
  • Emmet County charges by the cubic yard. Construction scraps and demolition debris cost $34.00 per cubic yard, plus a fuel surcharge of $3.19 per cubic yard.

That split changes how you should load. Where a site weighs debris, heavy material drives the cost. Where it measures volume, bulky items like cabinets and couches cost more, so breaking them down saves space.

Posted rates can change during the year, so look at the county's official page for the latest figures. Your account manager can confirm which disposal site handles your address and explain what will shape your final quote.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Michigan?

You typically won't need a permit when the container sits on your own driveway or private lot. A spot on the street, sidewalk or berm is different. Placing a dumpster there requires approval from whoever maintains that road, and you'll want it settled before delivery.

Michigan handles container placement locally, and the right office depends on the road:

  • On a state trunkline, the Michigan Department of Transportation controls the right-of-way, and work within it needs an MDOT permit.
  • On a Detroit street, the city asks you to keep roll-off containers on your own property. Street or berm placement requires a permit from the Department of Public Works.

Outside city limits, many roads belong to a county road commission rather than the township, so a single address can involve two offices. If you can't tell which one covers your street, your account manager will find the right contact before your delivery date.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Michigan

Everyday debris from homes and job sites is generally fine. The limits mostly come from what each landfill's license allows, and those licenses follow rules set by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

Michigan law bars several items from ordinary landfills. Whole tires, lead acid batteries, used oil and most yard clippings can't be buried, and neither can deposit beverage containers, which go back to the store. Empty drums must be crushed or full of accepted waste, and business liquids must be solidified first. A single drum or a pile of grass clippings can get your load refused.

Hazardous waste, free liquids and friable asbestos stay out of standard landfills across the country. Asbestos needs a site that is licensed and set up to receive it.

Individual sites go further. The Muskegon County landfill turns away refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, along with reusable propane tanks. It also charges a fee for any load that arrives without a tarp.

Got electronics, tires, appliances or something you're unsure about? Ask your account manager where those items should go before they end up in the container.

Michigan Landfill Disposal Sites

Michigan disposal is split among county public works departments, authorities and private operators. Which site takes your debris depends on where the project is.

The South Kent Recycling & Waste Center at 10300 South Kent Drive in Byron Center holds the only open, active municipal solid waste landfill in Kent County. It's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Emmet County's Pleasantview Road Drop-off Center at 7363 S. Pleasantview Road near Harbor Springs is a transfer station. Garbage there is loaded onto semis and buried at a landfill south of Onaway in Presque Isle County.

The Muskegon County landfill serves the lakeshore and posts its own list of prohibited items. Questions about a specific item go to 231-724-6001.

EGLE licenses these facilities and decides which materials each may accept. Once you book, your account manager confirms the site for your address and any material limits that apply there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Michigan?

In Michigan, expect about $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster and $699–$899 for a 40-yard, for a standard five-day rental. What you pay depends on container size, the kind of debris and the county landfill that accepts it. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before booking.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Michigan?

Not from the state. A dumpster in your driveway usually needs no permit. Street or berm placement does, through MDOT on a state trunkline, the city on a city street, or often the county road commission in a township. Your account manager can track down the right office.

What can't go in a dumpster in Michigan?

Hazardous waste, free liquids, friable asbestos, whole tires, lead acid batteries, used oil, yard clippings, deposit bottles and cans, and empty drums. Some landfills also refuse refrigerant appliances and propane tanks, and one banned item can get the entire load rejected.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Michigan county to the next?

Counties set their own disposal rates and even their own units. Muskegon County weighs roll-off loads and charges by the ton, while Emmet County measures debris by the cubic yard and adds a fuel surcharge. The same project can cost more in one county than another.

Can I put tires in a Michigan dumpster?

No, not whole ones. Michigan landfills can't bury whole tires, though they may accept tires that have been cut or shredded. Leave tires out of your container and ask your account manager about a recycling option before loading begins.

Does Michigan charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Yes. Michigan collects a small state surcharge on each ton of waste, and counties such as Kent build it into their posted landfill rates. It sits inside the disposal cost rather than showing as its own line, and your account manager can explain how it affects your quote.
