in Boston
At Prime Dumpster, we arrange porta potty rentals throughout Boston, Massachusetts, across every neighborhood from Dorchester and Roxbury to Charlestown, East Boston, the Seaport and out to Hyde Park and West Roxbury. Nowhere in the state generates a wider mix of work. Construction runs from Seaport towers and lab fit-outs down to triple-decker roof decks and basement conversions. The events calendar carries road races, parades, block parties, festivals and a whole summer of outdoor programming on City land.
Price depends on the model, the unit count, the booking length and the service frequency. Below are our ranges, the Boston permit that governs a street placement, and the two Massachusetts rules that decide your count.
Boston is the one city in Massachusetts where the City's own charges can rival the rental itself, and they are published rather than quoted. The Street Occupancy Permit carries a flat base charge of $50. On top of that sits a space charge: ten cents per square foot per day for the first five hundred square feet, then five cents per square foot per day. Signage is $4 each. A metered space costs $20 per meter per day. The City Council amended that ordinance in December 2016, replacing a scheme that had been largely unchanged since 1982, and the figures sit on the Public Works fee page. Read as a daily rate against square footage, it rewards a compact footprint.
Model mix is the second lever. An accessible unit costs little more than a standard one, while a flushing model or a trailer is a different class of spend. On a Seaport or Back Bay event where guests are dressed up, that difference is usually the point.
Access is the third, and Boston is the hardest ground in the state. One-way streets, resident permit parking, tunnel height limits and alleys that cannot take a service truck all add driver time. Send a photograph of the spot before you book and the figure comes back grounded in reality.

Our porta potty calculator gives a starting figure, and your account manager tests it against the peak hour and the footprint you are paying the City for.
Choose by the user and the length of stay. There is a short description of every model on the porta potty options page.
The Standard Porta Potty is the everyday unit on a Boston build: one private stall with a toilet, a urinal, paper and sanitizer.
The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty is the wide-door unit that enters level with the ground and holds grab bars with clear turning space. It is the model the Massachusetts accessible rule is written about, and in Boston it also reads well against the pedestrian detour question.
The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty flushes and keeps odors down, which is what a Seaport function or a Public Garden wedding is buying.
The Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink carries a sink, soap and mirror inside the stall, so a Boston crowd does not form two lines.
The Solar Porta Potty runs its light and fan from a roof panel, which matters on an evening booking along the Harborwalk or on a site with no temporary supply yet.
The Handwashing Station is the free-standing unit federal rules make compulsory at a workplace, with clean water, soap and single-use towels. One belongs beside every food truck.
The Restroom Trailer brings several private stalls with running water and climate control. On a long downtown project it is the piece that changes the experience.
Describe the site to your account manager and they will build the mix around the footprint.
On private ground, no Boston permit is published for a portable restroom standing on a lot or inside a fenced site. Where a building permit is already open, the restroom is part of that site setup.
On a street or sidewalk, the instrument is the Street Occupancy Permit from Public Works, and its own scope wording is about access rather than about objects. The City describes it as a permit that allows you to restrict access to a section of a street or sidewalk in Boston for a certain amount of time. That phrasing is why it reaches a portable restroom without naming one. If your unit takes space the public would otherwise walk or drive through, you are restricting access. Applications go in at least seven business days before you need the space. The City asks for the job type, the duration, a traffic plan and your plan for a Boston police detail. You also provide proof that you are bonded, and the meter numbers for any metered spaces you intend to take.
Two conditions in Boston's own application catch suppliers and customers out, and both are worth reading before you order. The first concerns storage containers that occupy the street. The City requires a letter of authorization from the company that owns those containers, and that company must hold a bond with the City. The second is the City's reserved power to refuse: Public Works says it reserves the right to withhold a permit where it judges the scope of work has not been described sufficiently. A vague application is not a slow application in Boston, it is a refused one. Public Works takes questions on 617-635-4900 at 1 City Hall Square, and the Transportation Department handles construction management plan review separately on 617-635-4675.
One Boston license that looks relevant and is not. Inspectional Services runs an Environmental Sanitation Division, and the City's Site Cleanliness Ordinance requires premises that maintain bulk refuse to hold a license from it. The scope noun is bulk refuse, a container question rather than a sanitation one, so nothing from that license is carried onto this order. Inspectional Services is on 617-635-5300.
Set units on firm, level ground with a clear approach for a service truck. Keep them 15 feet clear of food service, away from catch basins draining to the harbor, and within roughly 200 feet of the crew at work. At an event, split the units into clusters at the busy points with an accessible model in each, which also reads better on a City application than a single long row.
Footprint discipline pays twice here. The space charge runs per square foot per day, so a tight layout that still leaves an accessible route costs less in City fees and is easier to approve. Where a sidewalk closure is unavoidable, plan the detour first.
Servicing is where Massachusetts departs from most of the country, because the licensing is municipal rather than statewide. Portable toilet waste is handled as septage. The hauler holds a septage permit from a local board of health, keeps a copy in the vehicle, and may discharge only where that permit allows. A contract running from Boston into Cambridge, Quincy or Somerville can therefore involve more than one municipal permit. Your account manager settles the interval and the destination in writing before delivery.

Most Boston orders on private ground are placed inside 24 to 48 hours, and three to five days secures a specific model. Anything on a street or sidewalk is governed by the City's own seven business day minimum, and a large event or a sidewalk closure deserves several weeks on top of that.
Five habits that keep a Boston delivery on schedule:
Prime Dumpster arranges porta potty delivery across all of Boston and into the cities just over the line. Those are Somerville 7 miles northwest, Cambridge 7 miles west, Chelsea 7 miles north, Everett 8 miles north, Revere 8 miles north and Quincy 9 miles south. Every figure there is measured from the Boston place point rather than from a single neighborhood zip code, because a city of this size cannot honestly be measured from one street corner.
Rental runs $199–$349 for a standard unit, $200–$300 accessible, $300–$400 for deluxe flushing or sink models, $500–$600 solar, $150–$250 for handwashing, and from $1,500 for a trailer. Boston is unusual in that the City's own street occupancy charges can be a comparable line on a street placement.
The City publishes no general ratio for a private organizer, so start at one unit per 50 guests across about four hours and add 15 to 20 percent for alcohol. Massachusetts separately requires an accessible unit in each public cluster. Your account manager sizes it from your peak hour.
A private Boston site uses the federal table, since the state plan covers only government workers. One facility serves 20 workers or fewer, then one toilet seat plus one urinal for each further 40, with washing provided. A site closed to all but the trades owes no accessible unit.
Weekly is the standard interval, with twice weekly on busy downtown sites and event units in summer. Every visit pumps the tank, sanitizes the interior and restocks consumables. The hauler works under a septage permit from a local board of health, which in Massachusetts is a city document rather than a state one.
Not for private Boston ground, including a driveway or a fenced work site. Once any part of the unit occupies a street or sidewalk, you need a Street Occupancy Permit from Public Works, filed at least seven business days ahead. Keep the unit behind the property line unless that is arranged.
A standard unit is a single narrow stall with a toilet, a urinal and sanitizer. The accessible model is wider, has a level entry rather than a step, and fits grab bars with clear floor space for a wheelchair to turn. Massachusetts wants it in public clusters and marked with the accessibility symbol.
A weekend sits inside our standard booking window and prices as the base case: $199–$349 standard, $300–$400 for a deluxe flushing unit, $150–$250 for handwashing. If the unit is going on a Boston street, remember the City's own daily charge applies for each day it stands there.
Tell us about your event or project and your zip code. We will work out whether your placement needs a Street Occupancy Permit, what the City's daily space charge will add, and how many of your units the Massachusetts accessible rule actually reaches.
Boston orders carry more moving parts than anywhere else in the state, which is exactly where coordination earns its keep. Your Prime Dumpster account manager tracks the permit clock, the bond question, the service interval and the delivery window together, so the paperwork and the equipment arrive in the right order.
