Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a city located in the Midwest region of the United States. It is situated along Lake Michigan and has a population of 592,025 according to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Milwaukee is home to many large employers such as Northwestern Mutual and Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The economy of Milwaukee relies heavily on its manufacturing base since it was once known for being an industrial hub.
In recent years, Milwaukee’s economy has become increasingly diverse with new industries like technology and professional services playing a larger role in the city’s economic growth. Despite this shift, some challenges remain due to high levels of poverty that affect certain parts of the city. In addition to poverty, education continues to be a concern given that more than half of students are not proficient in math or reading by grade eight according to one report from 2018.
Despite these issues, there have been improvements made within both areas when compared with previous decades and steps taken towards creating equitable opportunities for all residents. This includes initiatives aimed at providing better educational resources and job training programs for underprivileged individuals living in Milwaukee.
