in Staunton
Virginia threw the national job site table out and wrote its own, and Staunton then adds a rule that decides when you can even place the order. Prime Dumpster provides porta potty rentals across Staunton, Virginia, for construction in the downtown wharf area and along the Richmond Road corridor, for events and festivals in Gypsy Hill Park and Montgomery Hall Park, and for homeowners working on a project in the Newtown and Beverley Hills neighborhoods. The state rule says in terms that the existing national standard does not apply, does not carry the force of law and is not printed in the Virginia volume.
What replaces it is simpler and stricter, and it counts sinks as well as toilets. The city layer matters just as much, because a Staunton event application has to go in 60 days ahead and applicants may not promote an event or enter commitments for goods and services until the event is approved. Below are the price ranges, the two counting rules, the permit routes, and how servicing works in the Shenandoah Valley.
Virginia's pairing rule is the first thing that shapes a Staunton job site quote. Because the state requires a handwashing facility alongside every toilet rather than just somewhere on site, a 40-worker crew here needs two toilets and two sinks. A sink is not an upsell in this state, so the base order is bigger than a contractor used to other states expects.
Lead time is the second factor, and it is unusually long for events. Sixty days is the filing window, and the city asks applicants to hold off on commitments until approval, so an event order here is agreed in principle early and confirmed once the city has signed off.
Site access is third. Staunton is a hill town with narrow downtown streets and steep approaches, and a service truck that has to stop short adds hose run and time to every visit. Park sites in Gypsy Hill are the straightforward end.
Rental length is the last lever. The two trips in and out do not change with the dates, so a weekend festival carries both inside two days while a long valley build spreads them across months and lowers the weekly figure.

Request a Quote NowVirginia is the one state we work in that displaces the national construction standard in so many words, and its own rule is short. One toilet and one handwashing facility shall be provided for each 20 employees or fraction thereof. There is no upper cut-off, so the arithmetic keeps stepping: 1 to 20 workers need one of each, 21 to 40 need two of each, 41 to 60 need three of each, and so on up.
The one escape is narrow, and it is worth stating properly rather than loosely. The sanitation requirement does not apply to mobile crews that have transportation readily available to nearby toilet facilities. A crew fixed to a Staunton site has no such argument.
Virginia also writes the unit specification itself, which helps when a customer asks what counts. A toilet facility is defined as a fixed or portable facility designed to contain the products of both defecation and urination, supplied with enough toilet paper for employee needs, and the definition expressly includes chemical toilets. On top of that, toilet facilities must be adequately ventilated, appropriately screened, built to insure privacy, and fitted with self-closing doors that can be closed and latched from the inside. They must be readily accessible, located close to the handwashing facility, and kept operational, clean and sanitary. Handwashing facilities must be refilled with potable water, soap and single-use towels.
For events, Staunton sets a trigger rather than a ratio. Where an event is expected to attract more than 50 attendees, an appropriate number of portable toilets, as determined by the city on an event-by-event basis, must be supplied. So the duty is firm and the number is the city's call, which means the count has to be agreed with the city before the order is final. As a planning figure, start at one unit per 50 guests across about four hours, add 15 to 20 percent where alcohol is served, and keep an accessible unit in any public layout. The Prime Dumpster calculator gives that first number, and your account manager will take it into the conversation with the city.
A Standard Porta Potty does the work on most crews, backyard jobs and vendor rows. The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty enters level with the ground, carries grab bars and leaves turning space inside, and belongs on any Staunton layout open to the public.
For a wedding or a guest-facing date, the Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty adds a flush and clean bowl water, while the Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink carries handwashing inside the unit. That second model is worth a close look in Virginia, where a sink is required alongside the toilet anyway.
A Solar Porta Potty lights itself where no power reaches, which suits park and trail work in the evening. A Handwashing Station is the stand-alone sink that satisfies the Virginia pairing rule on a job site. For a long build or a formal reception, the Restroom Trailer gives separate stalls with heating and cooling. All seven models are described on the porta potty options page.
On private property, no. A unit on your own driveway, yard or job site lot in Staunton falls outside the city's street rules.
In the street, the city's general bar is unusually wide. No person shall obstruct a public street or sidewalk, or the space vertically above it, by placing there anything whatsoever which will hinder or obstruct the passage of persons or vehicles in any manner whatsoever, except as otherwise specifically provided. A standing restroom is plainly caught.
Two routes sit against that bar, and they come from different offices. During building operations, it is unlawful to obstruct a street or sidewalk with building materials, ladders, scaffolds or ropes, or in any other manner and regardless of the character or extent of the obstruction, unless a permit has first been obtained from the office of the chief of police. That permit limits both the amount of space occupied and the period of time it may be used for.
Separately, the city manager or a designee may permit the temporary use of any city right-of-way, including a street, an on-street parking space or a sidewalk, and may close it to travel for a set period, where that will not be unduly injurious to public safety and convenience and traffic can be detoured. The written permit carries conditions: liability and property damage insurance naming the city as an additional insured unless waived, liability for damage, the exact location and approved use described in the permit, and no advertising beyond limited identifying signage. It is revocable, applications go in writing to the city manager, and a fee may be charged under a separate council ordinance. One detail is worth planning around: a permit authorizing use for longer than 10 days may be appealed by any city resident or local business owner within five calendar days, with the city manager deciding within five days and that decision final.
For events, the application goes in at least 60 days ahead, a police public activity permit may be required on top, and the event map has to show where the portable toilets will stand. Park events are handled on 540-332-3945 and all other events on 540-332-3812, with Public Works on 540-332-3892 and the city switchboard on 540-332-3800. Your account manager will work out which door your order goes through.
Staunton writes two placement rules about portable toilets directly. Portable toilets are not to be rinsed on site, and they are not to be placed near restaurants or food vendors. The first makes the service visit the only time a unit gets washed out, and the second rules out the convenient corner next to the food row, so the layout needs settling before the map goes in.
Beyond that, choose firm, level ground with the door clear of foot traffic, back from the curb and off any sidewalk, and leave the truck one straight approach within hose reach. On a steep Staunton street, check that the pad is genuinely level before the unit lands.
A weekly visit is the normal pattern on a Staunton job site, and it pumps the tank, washes the unit out, recharges deodorizer and restocks paper and sanitizer. Festival weekends and food vendor rows move that to daily. Because Virginia requires the facility to be kept operational, clean and sanitary and stocked with paper, the schedule is part of compliance rather than presentation.
Virginia adds one more duty at the back end, and it is short: disposal of wastes from the facilities shall not cause unsanitary conditions. In practice the contents leave Staunton by truck for a treatment works permitted to take hauled domestic waste, and the state health department runs the sewage handling and disposal side. Your account manager keeps the service record and the disposal route recorded on your account.

Most standard Staunton orders leave within a day or two. Festival weekends in the parks tighten trailers and accessible units across the valley, and so does the spring construction push.
Our Staunton routes follow the valley and the gap east over the Blue Ridge, reaching Waynesboro, Harrisonburg and Charlottesville, which are the three porta potty service areas we publish within about 40 miles. They are listed below, and the next nearest is beyond an hour's drive.
The unit with a sink runs $300 to $400 here, as does the flushing model, and in Virginia a sink earns its place. A standard Staunton unit is $199 to $349 and the accessible model $200 to $300. Solar is $500 to $600, a handwashing station $150 to $250, and trailers open at $1,500. Your account manager confirms the Staunton quote.
Staunton requires an appropriate number above 50 attendees and decides that number event by event, so the count is agreed with the city. As a planning start, allow one unit per 50 guests over four hours and add 15 to 20 percent for alcohol. Your account manager will handle the conversation.
Virginia replaces the national table with its own: one toilet and one handwashing facility for each 20 employees or fraction of 20, with no upper limit. So 40 workers need two of each and 60 need three of each. The only crew excused is a mobile one with a ride to nearby facilities.
Weekly is the Staunton baseline, moving to daily for festivals and food vendors. A visit empties the tank, washes the unit, recharges deodorizer and leaves fresh paper and sanitizer. The city also bars rinsing a unit on site, so the scheduled visit is the only wash it gets.
No. A unit inside your own Staunton property line needs no city permit, because the obstruction rules are written about public streets, sidewalks and the space above them. Keep it off the public walk. An event on private ground open to the public still needs the city's event process.
A standard unit is the narrow single-user model suited to a driveway or a vendor row. An accessible unit is wider, has a level entry instead of a step, carries grab bars and leaves a wheelchair room to turn. Virginia's own definition accepts either as a toilet facility on a job site.
A Staunton weekend is quoted from the standard $199 to $349 range, because the delivery and collection trips are the same two trips whether the stay is two days or six months. Short stays therefore sit near the top. Your account manager will quote the weekend rate.
Tell us about your event or project and your zip code. Mention your event date early, because Staunton wants the application 60 days out and asks you not to commit before approval.
Your Prime Dumpster account manager handles the details, from unit count and service schedule to permit contacts and delivery timing, so you can focus on your event or project.
