Find Sustainable Porta Potty
in Harrisonburg
At Prime Dumpster, we provide porta potty rentals across Harrisonburg, Virginia, and the Rockingham County communities spread through the Shenandoah Valley around it. Units support construction and student housing work near the university, poultry and farm operations across the valley floor, road and utility crews, roofing and remodeling jobs in the older city blocks, and outdoor events of every kind, from a downtown festival to a county fair weekend to a 5K through the neighborhoods.
Your price depends on the unit you choose, how many you need, how long they stay, and how often a truck returns. Below you will find our ranges, the Virginia counts that actually apply here, the restroom ratio the City prints on its own event application, and how quickly we can be on site.
Those ranges assume a three-day rental, which is how a Harrisonburg weekend order is normally written. A one-day Saturday booking and a Friday through Sunday window usually cost the same.
Virginia changes the shape of a construction quote, and it is worth knowing before you compare numbers. The state pairs a handwashing facility with every toilet, so a Harrisonburg job site order is two line items rather than one, and the extra item is a legal requirement rather than something we added.
Job sites are priced in four-week blocks with weekly service rolled in, and the weekly figure eases after the first block.
Access and the seasons finish it off. A unit at the back of a soft site, behind a locked gate, or up a farm lane costs the driver time. Valley summers push many customers to twice-weekly service, and winter work needs the cold-weather setup.

Request a Quote NowThis is the section to read twice if you have worked in another state, because Virginia does not follow the national rule. Virginia writes its own construction sanitation standard and says in terms that the federal standard does not apply here and does not carry the force of law. The Virginia number is both simpler and tighter.
Our porta potty calculator gives you a first figure. Your account manager will then square it with the Virginia pairing rule and the City's event ratio before anything is booked.
Think about who uses the unit and for how long, and remember that in Virginia a sink goes with it. Everything is on the porta potty options page.
The Standard Porta Potty is the working unit on valley sites: one private stall with a toilet, a urinal, a paper holder, and sanitizer.
The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty is wider, enters level with no step, and holds grab bars and wheelchair turning space. Harrisonburg wants a tenth of your event units to be this model.
The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty brings a flushing bowl and far better odor control, which guests notice at a wedding or a reception.
The Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink has a sink, soap, and a mirror inside the stall, so guests wash up without walking the site.
The Solar Porta Potty powers its light and fan from a roof panel, which answers a farm lane with no power and an evening event.
The Handwashing Station is the item Virginia makes compulsory on a job site. It stands on its own with potable water, soap, and single-use towels, which is exactly what the state standard asks for.
The Restroom Trailer tows in with several private stalls, running water, and climate control. Weddings, university events, and long-running sites justify it.
Not sure yet? Tell your account manager the crew size or the guest count and they will build a compliant mix.
On private ground, no. Harrisonburg issues no permit for a portable toilet standing on your own lot, a driveway, or a fenced job site. The right of way is where Harrisonburg is unusually strict.
Private property and job sites: keep the unit inside your property line and clear of the public sidewalk. If the project already carries a building permit, the unit is part of the site setup.
Streets and sidewalks, and a rule that reaches rented equipment by name: the City's street rules make it unlawful to store, keep, or expose for show, sale, or rental any goods, vehicles, or property on a public right of way without a license, permit, or franchise issued by the City. Property encroaching on the right of way without one may be taken into custody and impounded by the police or Public Works, with an impoundment fee set by the city manager payable before it is returned. A rented portable toilet standing in a Harrisonburg street falls squarely inside that wording, so get permission first.
The downtown encroachment license, and its limit: the City does publish an encroachment license with a $100 application fee, issued by Community Development on 540-432-7700. It is written for Downtown businesses in the central business district and covers outdoor dining, planters, portable furnishings, awnings, and wall fixtures. The City says plainly that some requests do not qualify and have to go to City Council instead, which is the likely path for a portable toilet outside downtown.
Events, and the City's own restroom ratio: a Harrisonburg special event is one on public property that needs City services, uses City streets, sidewalks, lots, alleys or parks, closes any part of a right of way, puts up stages, booths, tents, or stands in a public place, or needs emergency personnel. The application asks directly how many portable restrooms you plan to have, where they will stand, and when they are dropped off and picked up, and it states the required ratio on the form.
The deadlines are calendar-based, which catches people out: an application for an event in the first half of the year is accepted no later than 90 days before the date, while an application for an event in the second half of the year has to be in by March 31. So a September festival is already late if you start planning in April. Staff review it and then it goes to City Council for consideration, and a certificate of insurance showing a million dollars of liability cover, with the City named as additional insured, is due no later than 30 days out.
One local wrinkle: an event on Court Square needs approval from Rockingham County rather than the City. Your account manager can help you work out which office you are dealing with.
Placement matters more in Virginia than elsewhere, because the sink has to sit near the toilet.
Start with firm, level ground, and plan the pair together. The state standard requires the toilet and the handwashing facility to be in close proximity and reachable by everyone on site, so set them side by side rather than at opposite ends of the job.
Keep units at least 15 feet from food service and well back from creeks and storm inlets. On a job site, place them within about 200 feet of the crew. At an event, break the units into clusters and make sure a tenth of them are accessible models, spread across the clusters rather than grouped in one corner.
Weekly service is our baseline, with more frequent visits available. Each visit empties the tank, washes the interior, and restocks paper, soap, and single-use towels, which is what the Virginia standard expects of the handwashing facility. On the disposal side, Virginia permits the handler rather than the unit: a sewage handling permit is issued by the state health commissioner, applied for through the district or local health department, and the process includes a conference, an inspection of the hauling equipment, and separate approval of each disposal site. Your account manager will confirm the schedule and the disposal arrangement before the first delivery.

Most Harrisonburg orders can be on site within 24 to 48 hours. Give us three to five days and we can put the exact units you need on the truck. For a festival weekend, a graduation, or a wedding, allow several weeks, because the whole valley wants the same dates.
These five habits keep a delivery smooth:
Prime Dumpster arranges porta potty delivery across Harrisonburg and the surrounding Rockingham and Augusta County communities, including Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Bridgewater, Dayton, Broadway, Timberville, Elkton and Grottoes. Harrisonburg sits well away from our other Virginia pages, so only three of them are within 60 road miles and we would rather tell you that than pad the list; Charlottesville is close as the crow flies but nearly an hour by road because the route crosses the Blue Ridge.
Allow $199–$349 for a standard unit and $200–$300 for an accessible one. Deluxe flushing and sink models sit at $300–$400, solar units at $500–$600, and a restroom trailer starts at $1,500. Remember Virginia pairs a handwashing station at $150–$250 with every toilet on a job site.
Harrisonburg prints the answer on its own application: at least one portable restroom per 150 participants, with a tenth of them accessible, and one per 50 participants where alcohol is served. Events running two hours or less, or with other bathrooms open to attendees, are treated differently.
Virginia replaces the federal table. You need one toilet and one handwashing facility for every 20 employees or fraction thereof, at every crew size, with no upper limit. A crew of 21 needs two of each. Only a mobile crew with transport to nearby facilities is exempt.
Weekly is our baseline and we can go more often. Every visit empties the tank, washes out the interior, and restocks paper along with soap and single-use towels for the handwashing facility, which is what Virginia requires. Busy sites and food events do better on two visits a week.
No. Harrisonburg issues no permit for a portable toilet on private ground, including a driveway or a fenced job site. Keep it inside your property line and off the public sidewalk. A unit standing in the street is a different matter and can be impounded without City permission.
The standard model is one narrow stall with a toilet, a urinal, and sanitizer. The accessible version is wider, enters level with no step, and carries grab bars and clear space for a wheelchair to turn. Harrisonburg asks for a tenth of your event restrooms to be accessible models.
Our ranges are built on three days, so a weekend is the base case. Reckon on $199–$349 for a standard unit, $300–$400 for a deluxe flushing one, and $150–$250 for a handwashing station. Your account manager will fix the delivery slot and the pickup day.
Tell us about your event or project and your zip code. We will pair the handwashing facilities Virginia requires with your toilets, work to the City's event ratio, and quote you on the call.
Your Prime Dumpster account manager handles the details, from unit count and service schedule to permit contacts and delivery timing, so you can focus on your event or project.
