Find Sustainable Porta Potty
in Richmond
At Prime Dumpster, we provide porta potty rentals throughout Richmond, Virginia, and the counties around it. Construction keeps units moving here, from rowhouse renovations in the Fan and Church Hill to warehouse conversions in Scott's Addition and road work across the city. Events do the same: festivals along the river, road races, neighborhood block parties, farmers markets, university move-in weekends, and weddings at the historic venues downtown.
What you pay comes down to which units you take, how many, how long they stay, and how often a driver services them. Below you'll find price ranges, counts for crews and crowds, the City permits that apply, and how quickly delivery can be arranged.
Those ranges are for a standard three-day rental, the way a weekend event is normally written up. A construction site is billed in four-week cycles, so the daily cost falls over a long project.
Handwashing stations matter more to a Richmond budget than people expect. Virginia pairs every job site toilet with a handwashing facility, so a crew order is really two line items rather than one. Your account manager will quote them together so there's no surprise.
Access is the other local factor. A flat lot off a main road is a quick drop. A narrow Fan District alley, a one-way street with cars on both sides, or a river-bottom site with a steep approach takes longer to reach, and the truck returns every week.
Season rounds it out. Spring and fall weekends fill with festivals, races, and outdoor weddings, and late-summer storm remnants sometimes bring a wave of cleanup work. Booking early is the simplest saving available.

One exception is worth knowing on the job site side: the state rule doesn't apply to a crew that moves between locations and has transportation to nearby restrooms. Everyone else needs the units on site.
Our porta potty calculator gets you a number quickly, and your account manager can confirm it against your crew size or guest list.
Match the unit to the people using it. All of them are side by side on our porta potty options page.
The Standard Porta Potty is the everyday choice, with a toilet, a urinal, a paper holder, and hand sanitizer. It covers job sites, yard projects, and casual gatherings.
The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty has a wide door, a flat entry, grab bars, and turning space for a wheelchair. Include at least one at anything open to the public.
The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty flushes and controls odor better, which guests notice at a wedding or a reception.
The Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink puts a sink, soap, and mirror inside the unit, handy where there's no room for a separate station.
The Solar Porta Potty powers its light and fan from the sun, a good fit for a river park site or a build with no power run yet.
The Handwashing Station is a stand-alone sink with clean water, soap, and towels. Virginia job sites need one for every toilet, and every food area should have one too.
The Restroom Trailer brings several stalls, running water, and climate control, for weddings, corporate events, and long-running sites.
Describe the job to your account manager and they'll put the right mix together.
On private property, a unit in your own yard, driveway, or fenced job site generally needs no City permit. Public ground is where the paperwork starts.
Working in the street: Richmond is an independent city, so it maintains its own streets and runs its own permits. A commercial contractor working in a City street needs a work in streets permit, and the City takes those calls at 804-646-1288.
Reserved parking: If you need curb space held for a unit or a truck, the City issues temporary no-parking permits. For a small event with no police staffing, requests go in at least three business days ahead. For a large event, the request is filed with the rest of the event paperwork 90 days ahead.
Street closures: Closing a street and its sidewalk needs a street closure permit, which keeps local and emergency access open. The City's permits page sets the deadline at 90 days for events of 300 or more participants that need police staffing, and at least 15 business days for smaller ones. You supply the barricades, cones, and signs, and a certificate of liability insurance naming the City.
Events: Every event on public property, or with an impact on public property, needs City permits, and a special event coordinator runs the review with a committee. Start by registering the event, on 804-646-0761, before you chase the individual permits. The parks and recreation events page is the front door.
State roads: Outside the city limits most roads are state roads. A state land use permit covers any activity in that right-of-way, including temporary use, and it comes from the district or residency office.
Food vendors: Each stand needs a Virginia temporary food establishment permit from the local health department. The application and a $40 fee are due at least ten calendar days before the first day, and a health specialist inspects the stand before the permit is issued. The state also notes that event coordinators often supply the portable toilets and handwash stations the vendors rely on, so that duty usually lands with the organizer.
If the right office isn't obvious, your account manager can help you work out who to call first.
Choose firm, level ground. Richmond's older neighborhoods have alleys, sloped yards, and brick surfaces that look solid and then shift, so pick a spot the truck can reach straight on. Watch for low limbs, narrow gates, and parked cars along the route.
Keep units at least 15 feet from any food service and away from storm inlets, creeks, and the river bank. On a job site, place them within about 200 feet of the work, and keep each toilet next to its handwashing station as the state rule requires. At an event, split the units into groups to shorten lines and put an accessible unit in each group.
A standard rental includes a weekly service visit, which pumps the tank, cleans and sanitizes the inside, and restocks paper and sanitizer. Festival weekends, large crews, and humid Virginia summers often justify a second visit. Your account manager can set the pattern.
Virginia permits the hauler as a sewage handler, and the permit application names the facility that will receive the load and needs that facility's written agreement to take it, plus an inspection showing a watertight tank. Richmond's own sewage is treated at the City's plant on the south bank of the James River, which can handle up to 75 million gallons a day and is the largest of its kind in the state. Your account manager can confirm the service plan for your units.

Most Richmond orders go out within 24 to 48 hours of booking. Three to five days of notice gives us more choice of unit types. For a festival, a race weekend, or a spring or fall wedding, book several weeks ahead, and remember that a street closure for a large event is filed 90 days out.
Five habits that keep a Richmond delivery smooth:
Prime Dumpster arranges porta potty delivery across the City of Richmond, from the Fan, Carver, and Museum District to Church Hill, Scott's Addition, Manchester, Southside, and the East End. We also serve the surrounding counties, including Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, and Goochland, with regular runs to Short Pump, Midlothian, Glen Allen, Mechanicsville, Hopewell, and Petersburg. City alley or county acreage, we plan delivery, service, and pickup around your schedule.
A standard porta potty averages $199 to $349 per unit here, and an accessible unit averages $200 to $300. Deluxe units run $300 to $400, and a restroom trailer starts at $1,500. Handwashing stations are a separate line, which matters on a Virginia job site. Your account manager confirms the total in your free quote.
Plan one unit for every 50 guests at a four-hour event, and add 15 to 20 percent more if alcohol is served. A 150-guest reception works out to three units plus a handwashing station if food is served. Any event open to the public should include at least one accessible unit.
Virginia is stricter than the federal rule. You need one toilet and one handwashing facility for every 20 workers, or any part of 20, with no urinal substitution. A crew of 45 needs three of each. The only exception is a mobile crew with transportation to nearby restrooms. Your account manager can size it.
A standard rental includes one visit a week to pump the tank, clean and sanitize the inside, and restock paper and hand sanitizer. Large crews, festival weekends, and humid summer stretches often call for two visits. Your account manager can set the schedule around your busiest days.
Usually not. A unit on your own yard, driveway, or fenced job site needs no City permit in Richmond. You will need City approval to use a street, a sidewalk, or reserved curb space, and a contractor working in the street needs a work in streets permit.
A standard unit is a compact single stall. An accessible unit is wider, with a flat entry, a wide door, grab bars, and space to turn a wheelchair. Federal standards ask for about one accessible unit in every twenty at a public event. Crew-only units on a construction site are exempt from that rule.
A weekend rental is written as three days, so a Saturday event usually costs about what the full weekend costs. A standard unit averages $199 to $349, a deluxe flushing unit averages $300 to $400, and a handwashing station averages $150 to $250. Your account manager confirms your delivery and pickup windows.
Tell us about your event or project and your zip code. We'll size the order, pair your toilets with the handwashing stations the state asks for, and give you a clear price on the call.
Your Prime Dumpster account manager handles the details, from unit count and service schedule to permit contacts and delivery timing, so you can focus on your event or project.
