Lumber, drywall, shingles, flooring, siding, cabinets, furniture, and ordinary cleanout junk are all welcome. The limits come from how Kansas handles certain materials and from what each receiving facility will accept.
Paints, stains, solvents, used oil and other automotive fluids, pesticides, and mercury-containing items are handled as household hazardous waste, not landfill waste. Whole tires are routed to permitted tire processing facilities instead, and asbestos is treated as a special waste that has to be arranged case by case. Keep every one of these out of your container.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos have no place in a standard dumpster, and neither do car batteries.
Electronics come out too. Shawnee County takes electronic waste at its household hazardous waste site at no charge, except for tube-style TVs and monitors, which carry a $40 charge each. The county also cannot take explosives or ammunition, pressurized gas cylinders, infectious waste, radioactive material, or unlabeled containers.
