On private property, a driveway or a job site you control, Northport asks for no separate container permit. That is where the unit should go, and the city's own rules are a good reason to keep it there.
Northport makes it unlawful to place trash, waste material or containers of it on any public street, public way or sidewalk, except where material is set out for collection and there is no back alley. It separately makes it unlawful to leave construction, demolition, remodeling or roofing waste on the public ways and streets for the city to pick up. So the street is not a placement option you can plan around in this city, and a job that truly cannot fit a container on private ground needs a conversation with the city first.
The rule that catches people out runs the other way. Northport requires anyone in the business of, or engaged to carry out, constructing, demolishing, remodeling, repairing, roofing or altering a building in the city to provide an on-site receptacle to collect litter, and to keep the material in it so wind, rain and animals cannot scatter it, unless the debris is properly disposed of every day. In other words a container is not merely allowed on a Northport job site, it is expected. The same chapter requires the owner of any multiple dwelling of four or more units to furnish a dumpster, screened from adjoining properties by fencing and landscaping approved by the zoning administrator.
Northport City Hall is at 3500 McFarland Boulevard on 205-339-7000, and Public Works takes service questions on 205-333-3003. Your Prime Dumpster account manager will confirm the placement works and find the right city contact if your spot involves public ground.
