Albany is the seat of Dougherty County and is located in the southwestern part of Georgia. It lies on the Flint River and has an area of nearly 53 square miles. With a population of 77,434 according to 2019 estimates, it is one of the most populous cities in Southwestern Georgia.
Albany was founded in 1836 as the county seat for Dougherty County by European American settlers who named it after their former home in New York State. The city grew rapidly during World War II due to increased demand for cotton and other commodities.
