In Northfield, Minnesota, you’ll never run out of things to do. With an abundance of history and sights that would make any other city envious, it’s quite clear why locals love it here.
Northfield is known for its historical past with two notable events in the 1800s. The first was when Jesse James attempted to rob the First National Bank in 1876 but was foiled by local citizens who banded together against him. The second event occurred several years later when three men tried to steal the town’s strongbox at one of the banks. Again, they were thwarted by brave citizens who chased them away from town. Both incidents are commemorated each year through reenactments as part of the Defeat of Jesse James Days festival held in September.
The small city also offers plenty for visitors looking for fun activities and attractions. There’s Carleton College which features beautiful landscaping complete with over 2,000 trees representing more than 140 species found on campus.
If you’re into art, there’s the Northfield Arts Guild showcasing works from regional artists along with classes and workshops throughout the year. And if outdoor recreation is your thing then explore nearby Cannon River or indulge in bird watching at St Olaf Nature Preserve which includes forest trails perfect for hiking or biking.
