What Factors Affect Your Dumpster Rental Price?

The base price pays for three things: bringing the container to your site, keeping it there for the rental period, and hauling the full load away. From there, your quote adjusts to fit the job.

Four details move it most. They are the container size, the weight and type of debris, the number of days you keep it and the location of the work. Roofing, tile and dirt get heavy fast, and a longer stay costs more.

Location matters because Georgia landfills each set their own tipping fees, and the landfill's charge is built into your quote. Many county landfills here also limit who and what they take. Some serve only their own residents, and some won't accept construction debris.

Two examples of how county disposal differs in practice:

  • The Athens-Clarke County Landfill charges $75 per ton for household garbage and $25.50 per ton for leaves and limbs. It accepts household waste only from Athens-Clarke and Oglethorpe counties and turns away construction and demolition material.
  • The Newton County Landfill in Covington charges $66.00 per ton and takes remodeling debris such as lumber, shingles and drywall, but only from Newton County residents.

For a contractor, the rules can matter more than the rate. A remodeling load from Athens has to go to a construction debris landfill instead, and splitting yard waste from trash can lower the bill where a site prices it separately.

Posted fees change from time to time, so confirm them on the county's own website. Your account manager can tell you which facility will take your load and what will shape your final price.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Georgia?

Keeping the container on private property, such as your driveway or a fenced job site, normally means you won't need a permit. Placing it on a public street, sidewalk or alley is different. You'll need approval from the government that maintains that road before the container is dropped off.

Georgia leaves street permits to the owner of each road. Two types of permission can apply:

  • On a state highway, work inside the right-of-way falls under the Georgia Department of Transportation. GDOT handles it through a right-of-way encroachment permit, and some local governments, such as Augusta, post the application on their websites.
  • On a city street, local rules apply. In Atlanta, the Department of Transportation requires a right-of-way permit and publishes a separate dumpster and POD placement checklist. Fees follow the city's traffic permit fee schedule. The container can't sit within 30 feet of an intersection or 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and it needs reflective tape or barricades with flashing lights. Questions go to the city at 404-330-6501.

Cities and counties outside Atlanta write their own versions of these rules. Your account manager can track down the right permit office for your address before delivery is scheduled.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Georgia

Ordinary household junk and building debris are usually fine to load. The real limits come from what each landfill's permit allows, and those permits are issued under rules from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD).

Georgia keeps a few common items out of its landfills. Scrap tires are banned from entering them, so whole tires can't ride along with your debris. Yard trimmings can't go to a municipal solid waste landfill, and a used lead-acid car battery can't be mixed with household trash.

Landfills across the country also refuse regulated hazardous waste and free liquids. Georgia sites are barred from taking radioactive waste as well. Friable asbestos needs a site set up for it. The Newton County Landfill, for example, takes asbestos only with 24 hours' notice and wrapped to EPD standards.

Local sites layer on rules of their own. The Newton County Landfill won't accept tires still mounted on rims, and the Athens-Clarke County Landfill won't take construction debris at all.

Not sure about electronics, tires, appliances or anything else in the pile? Your account manager can tell you where those items belong before you start loading.

Georgia Landfill Disposal Sites

Georgia's disposal network mixes county and city landfills, private landfills and separate construction debris sites. The site that takes your load depends on where the work is and what you're throwing out.

The Athens-Clarke County Landfill is at 5700 Lexington Road in Winterville. It handles household waste only, and its phone number is 706-613-3508. Construction debris from the area goes to the Oglethorpe County or Walton County construction and demolition landfills.

The Newton County Landfill sits at 205 Lower River Road in Covington, east of Atlanta. It's open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and the number is 770-786-5808.

In Augusta, the Environmental Services Department runs the city's landfill and adds the State Solid Waste Surcharge to every bill.

The Georgia EPD permits each landfill and decides which materials it can take. Your account manager confirms the receiving facility for your address at booking, along with any material limits that apply there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Georgia?

Georgia rentals usually cost $399–$499 for a 10-yard dumpster and $699–$899 for a 40-yard, based on a standard five-day rental. Container size, the type of debris and the county landfill that accepts it decide where your price lands. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates before you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Georgia?

Not from the state. A container on your own driveway or lot typically needs no permit. One on a public street does, and you apply to whoever maintains that road, which is GDOT for a state highway or the city or county for a local street. Your account manager can find the right contact.

What can't go in a dumpster in Georgia?

Scrap tires, yard trimmings bound for household-waste landfills, lead-acid car batteries, hazardous waste, liquids and radioactive material. Some sites add their own limits, and Athens-Clarke refuses construction debris, so the wrong item can send a whole load to a different landfill.

Why does dumpster rental cost vary from one Georgia county to the next?

Every landfill sets its own fees and entry rules. Athens-Clarke charges more per ton for household garbage than for leaves and limbs and won't take construction debris, while Newton County accepts remodeling waste from residents only. Those differences change where a load goes and what it costs.

Can I put tires in a Georgia dumpster?

Keep them out. Georgia bans scrap tires from its landfills, and sites that accept tires often charge per tire and may refuse or charge extra for ones still on rims. Set them aside and ask your account manager where they should go before the container is filled.

Does Georgia charge a state fee on landfilled waste?

Yes. Georgia requires disposal facilities to collect a state solid waste surcharge on each ton of waste. Augusta's landfill, for example, adds it to every bill. Your account manager can explain how the surcharge and local fees apply to your load.
