Find Sustainable Porta Potty
in Elgin
At Prime Dumpster we supply porta potty rentals right across Elgin, Illinois, the largest city in this stretch of the Fox Valley, where construction runs from downtown redevelopment to the industrial parks on the east side, and the events calendar covers festivals on the riverfront, parades through the heart of town and neighborhood block parties. Elgin is also a city in two counties at once, with most of it in Kane County and a slice reaching east into Cook County, and that split is worth understanding before you assume which rules apply to your site.
Price depends on how many units you take, how long you keep them, how often the units are serviced, which models you want and how close the service truck can park. The sections below cover the two-county question, what Elgin asks event organizers about sanitation, the federal crew table, and what we looked for in the Elgin code and did not find.
The rental period is the biggest single lever. A riverfront festival weekend is a short booking with heavy servicing. An industrial build on the east side runs for months and moves to a monthly rate with lighter servicing per unit.
The number of units is the second lever, and on a job site that comes straight off crew size, because neither Elgin nor Illinois sets its own construction count.
Service frequency is the third, and Illinois puts real content into each visit. After every pumping the entire interior has to be cleaned and sanitized, taking in the seat, the urinal, counters and shelves, the tank, the walls, floor, door and ceiling, plus the outer door face and handle. Unless a power washer is used, two physically separated sets of cleaning equipment are required.
Access is the fourth and it varies a lot across a city this size. Downtown Elgin has narrow one-way streets and limited loading room, while the east-side industrial parks have wide aprons and gates. Illinois says in terms that service trucks must have access to the units they service, so where the truck can stand is part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Request a Quote NowA private Elgin job site follows the federal worker-sanitation table. Illinois does operate an approved worker-safety plan, but it covers state and local government workers only, and that plan has taken on the federal construction standards wholesale, with its one local difference being a recordkeeping rule. The federal table has three steps: one facility where there are twenty workers or fewer; one toilet seat and one urinal for every forty workers once the crew is above twenty; and one toilet seat and one urinal for every fifty once the crew reaches two hundred. The two hundred step is federal and nationwide, so nobody should sell it as an Illinois rule.
Elgin adds no construction count of its own. We looked. The city's health and safety rules, its building and construction rules, its streets rules and its business licensing rules carry no portable toilet count, no event ratio and no minimum. That absence is a finding worth stating, because two of Elgin's neighbors in Kane County do impose a site duty, and Elgin does not.
Handwashing is federal and applies to every job site in the country. Lavatories must be made available at all places of employment, supplied with hot and cold or tepid running water, soap and a means of drying. Mobile crews with transport readily available to nearby facilities are the one exception, and it reaches the toilet count too.
Illinois does publish one choice with a number in it. Hand sanitizer at every unit, refilled at each pumping, is the default. As an alternative to that refilling, a single portable handwashing unit with soap and single-use towels may serve up to five portable toilets, as long as it stands within twenty feet of them. On a large Elgin site that is normally the easier arrangement.
For events the state uses adequacy rather than arithmetic. Enough units for the crowd you expect, serviced often enough to stay sanitary and free of odors. Where that is not met, the duty to add units or tighten the schedule falls on the employer, the property owner or the event coordinator.
And the citation goes to the landowner. The breach Illinois writes down is the property owner's, for failing to provide a sufficient number of units or a service frequency capable of keeping them sanitary. If your Elgin event sits on ground you have borrowed or rented, the paperwork lands on the owner. Tell them, and your account manager will provide the unit count and service plan in writing.
With no published figure, we size events from attendance, duration, alcohol and layout. Prime Dumpster's porta potty calculator is a useful first pass before your account manager confirms the number.
The Standard Porta Potty is the workhorse for trades crews, industrial sites and street festivals, and it needs no connections.
The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty gives level entry, interior grab bars and turning room. Any public Elgin event should carry at least one, and more as the crowd grows.
The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty adds a foot-pump flush and a fresh-water tank, which is what a wedding or a corporate day wants.
The Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink puts the basin inside the cabin, a help on a cramped downtown site with nowhere for a separate station.
The Solar Porta Potty lights its own interior, which matters at an evening riverfront event.
The Handwashing Station is the unit the Illinois five-to-one allowance is built around and the one to take whenever food is served.
The Restroom Trailer is the upgrade for weddings, corporate events and long-running industrial sites. Our porta potty options page lists the whole range available in the Fox Valley.
On private ground in Elgin no permit attaches to the unit. There is no city application for a portable toilet and no city sanitation condition on a building permit, which is a genuine difference from Carpentersville and Geneva a few miles up and down the river.
Work in the public right of way is different and needs the city's agreement first, whether that is a street, an alley, a parkway or a sidewalk. The office to call is the City of Elgin at 150 Dexter Court on 847-931-6001, and anything standing on city pavement should be treated as unconfirmed until the city confirms it. We will not promise you a street placement.
Events carry a city approval, and sanitation is part of the form rather than a condition with a number. When you apply to hold a special event in Elgin, the city asks you to state the dates and hours, the exact location and parade route, the nature of the event, the activities, the estimated number of people attending, whether tents or temporary structures will be used, whether electricity and water are needed, and, as its own item, whether toilets or other sanitary facilities are to be provided. So the unit count ends up written into the customer's application. It costs you nothing to answer that question well, and your account manager can give you the count, the model mix and the service days to put on the form.
Now the two counties. Elgin sits in Kane County for most of its area and reaches into Cook County on its eastern edge. On the Kane side, the county's own offices publish nothing reachable on portable sanitation, so treat that layer as an open question. On the Cook side the only county instrument touching this trade is a reporting duty that falls on haulers, with returns due at the end of April, July, October and January, and it is nothing a customer applies for. Neither county asks an Elgin customer for a toilet permit.
At state level the licensing sits with us. Illinois licenses Portable Sanitation Businesses and certifies the technicians who service the units, through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Your account manager will confirm what your Elgin job needs and which office to call.
Choose firm, level ground. On an east-side industrial site that is easy. On a downtown infill lot it often means putting the unit on the one piece of hardstanding and planning the truck route around it.
Leave the service truck a usable approach, and tell us about gates and their hours. The Illinois service-truck access requirement is a legal duty rather than a convenience, and a unit parked behind a stack of material creates a problem for both sides.
Keep units well clear of food service and drinking water, and take a handwashing station rather than relying on sanitizer wherever food is served. At a riverfront festival, downwind and off the main pedestrian line is the usual answer.
Disposal is controlled from collection to discharge. Illinois does not allow the contents of a portable toilet to be applied to land, and they must reach an approved receiving point through a licensed business. That chain runs through a licensed partner, and your account manager can describe it if your project paperwork needs it.
Weekly service is the baseline on a construction site and daily service at a busy event. Illinois sets no fixed interval of its own, only the duty to keep units sanitary and odor free.

Elgin is one of the easier places in the Fox Valley to serve quickly, and a standard unit can usually be on site inside a day. Festival weekends are the pinch point, when accessible units and trailers across Kane County all go at once.
Client Reviews
Prime Dumpster covers the whole Fox Valley around Elgin on both sides of the county line, taking in South Elgin just downriver, Carpentersville and Algonquin upriver, Streamwood over toward the Cook County side, and St. Charles to the south. A contractor working several of these sites can normally share one service route.
In Elgin a standard cabin is $199 to $349 and an accessible one $200 to $300. Flushing and sink models come in at $300 to $400, solar at $500 to $600, washing stations at $150 to $250, and a trailer opens at $1,500.
Illinois publishes no attendance ratio and Elgin sets none, so the number is a planning judgment. We work from your expected crowd, the hours, whether alcohol is served and how the site is laid out, and your account manager confirms a count that meets the state adequacy standard.
The federal table gives one facility for crews of twenty or fewer, one toilet seat and one urinal per forty workers above twenty, and one per fifty once the crew passes two hundred. Elgin adds no count of its own, so the federal numbers are the whole answer here.
Weekly on most construction sites, daily at busy events. Illinois requires the full interior cleaned and sanitized after each pumping, including seat, urinal, shelves, tank, walls, floor, door, ceiling and handle. Your account manager sets the frequency to your traffic.
No. Elgin issues no permit for a portable toilet on private ground and attaches no sanitation condition to a building permit. Placing a unit in a city street, alley, parkway or sidewalk is a separate question and needs the city's agreement before delivery.
The accessible cabin is wider, level at the threshold, fitted with bars inside, and clear enough on the floor for a chair. A standard cabin offers none of that. Every Elgin public event should have an accessible unit in the order, and a riverfront festival will want several.
Two days on a standard Elgin cabin falls in the $199 to $349 range, and delivery, collection and one service visit are usually inside that. Flushing units and trailers cost more and disappear first on festival weekends, so book early. Your account manager will price the dates you need.
Tell us about your event or project and your zip code. We will give you the count and the model mix you need for the city event form, and schedule servicing around the access on your particular street.
Your Prime Dumpster account manager handles the details, from unit count and service schedule to permit contacts and delivery timing, so you can focus on your event or project.
