The town dates back to 1835 when it was founded by Solon Robinson, who had been sent out on an expedition for land settlement with other settlers from New York State. The area soon became populated with farmers who grew potatoes, corn, wheat, oats, and barley. In 1930, residents voted to incorporate as a Village and named it after one of their original founders, Peter Mundelein.
