Most remodel and cleanout debris is welcome. The limits come from Utah rules and from what the valley landfill will take.
The landfill refuses asbestos, dead animals, liquid loads, septic loads, and any unopened drum. It also turns away anything that was registered as a vehicle, which means cars, trailers, camp trailers, motorcycles, four-wheelers, and boats, along with their parts; those go to a licensed dismantler instead.
Paint, solvents, fuel, motor oil, pesticides, and yard chemicals never belong in a container. Salt Lake County runs a free drive-up household hazardous waste center at 8805 South 700 West in Sandy, open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for county residents. Businesses pay a fee there and need an appointment first.
A few things are allowed but billed separately. Mattresses and box springs are fine, with the first three included and extras charged per piece. Residential tires are accepted in small numbers for an added fee. Mowers and snow blowers go in only once the gas and oil are drained.
Electronics have a free route. The landfill takes computers, laptops, monitors, flat panel screens under 65 inches, and circuit boards from residents at no charge, so pull those out before pickup. Anything you are unsure about, ask your account manager first.
