Brooklyn, New York is the most populous borough in the city of New York. According to a 2017 US Census Bureau estimate, Brooklyn has over 2.5 million residents packed into an area spanning 71 square miles (183 km2). This makes it more populated than Los Angeles County and nearly twice as dense as Manhattan; with 34,917 people per square mile compared to 17,890 for Manhattan and 8,092 for LA County.
The first European settlement in what would eventually become Brooklyn was established by Dutch settlers in 1636 under the name Breuckelen. The British annexed it along with all other Dutch possessions in America after defeating them during the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1664–1667. Since then, Brooklyn has grown quite significantly from its rural beginnings to today’s thriving metropolis that serves as home to many diverse cultures and communities.
It is home to some of NYC’s most iconic landmarks such as Coney Island and Grand Army Plaza. In recent years there has been a surge of new businesses popping up throughout Brooklyn offering everything from world-renowned food venues to trendy music halls and art galleries showcasing local talent. With so much on offer, it’s no wonder why Brooklyn remains one of the top destinations for tourists looking to experience something truly unique when visiting New York City.
