Most household and jobsite debris is fine. North Carolina keeps a long list of materials out of landfills, and the Town adds its own rules on top.
The state bans from landfills used oil and oil filters, yard trash, white goods such as refrigerators and washers, antifreeze, aluminum cans, whole scrap tires, lead-acid batteries, wooden pallets, oyster shells, televisions, and discarded computer equipment including monitors and printers. Mercury thermostats and fluorescent tubes are barred from unlined landfills, and every construction and demolition landfill in the state counts as unlined.
Hazardous waste, paint, solvents, fuel, and pool chemicals stay out of a container as well, and asbestos needs its own handling.
The Town of Cary will not collect earth, rocks, masonry, concrete, scrap metal, lumber, sheet rock, plaster, asphalt shingles, or porcelain plumbing fixtures at the curb, and its residents' drop-off site is closed to contractors and to construction debris. A roll-off container is the straightforward route for all of it.
Mention tires, appliances, electronics, and anything unusual to your account manager when you book so the load clears the gate the first time.
