Hazardous waste, radioactive material, and medical waste are barred outright. Liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, used oil, and asbestos stay out as well, along with anything burning or smoldering that could start a fire in the container.
Kannapolis singles out items that are dangerous to the people handling them. Glass, fluorescent tubes, light bulbs, sharp metal, and syringes must be securely wrapped and marked with a visible warning before they go in. That rule exists for a reason and it applies in a rented container as much as a city cart.
Tires and large appliances need to be kept separate and mentioned at booking, because they carry their own handling charges. Electronics have their own route too.
The city also requires that solid waste be disposed of only at a landfill approved by state health authorities, a fully permitted incinerator, or an approved container, so the destination is prescribed rather than chosen. If you have an item you are unsure about, flag it to your account manager before loading day.
