Wilson, North Carolina is surrounded by history and sites that tell the story of America. From historical buildings to civil war battlefields, there is much to explore in this city.
The town of Wilson dates back to 1855 when it was founded as an agricultural center for farmers, who were looking to make use of the fertile land surrounding the area. During the Civil War period, the town saw a lot of activity due to its strategic location along two major railroads – the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad and the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad. This allowed soldiers and supplies from both sides to pass through Wilson during battles like Plymouth Station in April 1865.
Today, many historic homes and buildings remain standing throughout Wilson’s downtown district, providing further evidence of what life was like here hundreds of years ago. In addition, several state parks scattered around town offer wonderful opportunities for hiking or camping on grounds where generations before have done so as well. Whether it’s admiring beautiful architecture or simply enjoying nature’s beauty, there is something special about discovering all that our city has to offer.
