Newark, Ohio was founded in 1802 and is named after Newark-on-Trent in England. One of the most prominent events that happened in Newark’s history involves the Revolutionary War when General William Irvine stayed at one of the local inns while on his march to attack Detroit.
Newark also has several sites which have been given historical markers or are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as All Saints Episcopal Church and the Midland Theater. It is home to many other landmarks such as the Courthouse Square District with its Victorian architecture and large elm trees planted around it. Additionally, you can find several museums like the Works Museum which showcases artifacts from local industrialists during World War II and exhibits about life during this time period.
