Framing lumber, drywall, shingles, flooring, cabinets, trim, doors, carpet, furniture, and general cleanout junk all belong in a roll-off.
Colorado keeps a short, firm list out of every landfill in the state. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment names the prohibited materials: lead-acid batteries, liquid waste or anything with free liquids in it, used oil, waste tires, and electronic devices and computers. A television buried in a load can get the whole container turned away, so pull electronics before you start.
Hazardous waste, paint, solvents, and fuel are out too, and asbestos belongs with a licensed abatement contractor rather than in a container.
Thornton's own rules point the same way. The city will not collect lumber, rocks, bricks, concrete blocks, tires, sod, dirt, gravel, or material from construction and remodeling in its household service, which is precisely the gap a roll-off fills. Its resident drop-off site takes motor oil, antifreeze, appliances, and yard material, but no dirt, sod, or rocks.
For household chemicals, Thornton residents can get a voucher from the City for the hazardous waste center at 9131 E. 96th Ave. in Henderson, which runs by appointment.
