Most building and household debris is accepted, including concrete, wood, metal, glass, plastics, and cardboard. The limits come from Indiana law and from what the county landfill turns away at the gate.
Indiana bans whole tires from landfills. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management states that landfills cannot accept whole waste tires, with narrow exemptions, and that open dumping or burning them is illegal. Tires have to go to a tire retailer, a retread facility, a registered tire handler, or a permitted disposal site instead.
The county landfill refuses hazardous waste outright, along with car batteries, lithium batteries, electronics, and liquid of any kind. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers are only accepted with a certified refrigerant reclamation form. Larger propane tanks are out, though small camping cylinders are fine. Gas tanks and sealed drums are refused unless they have been triple washed and opened so staff can see they are empty.
The City adds its own rule for anything put out for city collection, which excludes tires, electronic equipment, and anything hazardous. Burying waste is prohibited anywhere in the city.
