Michigan City is refreshingly direct about what its own service will not take, and the rule was updated in November 2024.
The City's code says building debris such as scrap lumber, plaster, roofing material, concrete, bricks and sanding dust resulting from the construction, repair or remodeling of any building on private property will not be removed by the sanitary district. Nor will dirt, stumps, tree trunks, limbs and branches four inches or larger in diameter, or metal materials. So there is no municipal route for a renovation at all.
The same 2024 ordinance goes further and makes a container the required answer for two classes of property. Buildings with three or more apartments must arrange and be financially responsible for private container pick-up, and the City will not collect from a business whose trash volume exceeds three carts, with those businesses also required to arrange private service. Where the refuse director finds a property has no space for a container, extra carts may be authorized instead at a per-cart rate.
For the destination, La Porte County's public body is the Solid Waste District of La Porte County at 2857 W. State Road 2 in La Porte, reachable on 219-326-0014. What it runs is a set of programs rather than a disposal site: curbside recycling, household hazardous waste, compost and yard waste, electronics recycling and community drop-off events. There is no county transfer station and no county construction site, and the District asks people to call before making a special trip because its office is not always staffed.
So a Michigan City construction load goes to a privately operated facility. We do not list those sites here, because we do not name facilities run by companies that also rent containers. What we do instead is tell you which one your load is going to, and what it charges, before anything is delivered. The City holds that information too, since a collector's permit application must state the proposed place of disposal.
