On private property, such as your own driveway or a fenced job site, The Colony does not require a dumpster permit. Keep the container clear of the sidewalk, the alley pavement, and any water or gas meter, and you are fine.
The street and the alley are a different story. The city's waste rules make it an offense to place waste in any street or alley at any time, and The Colony publishes no permit that would let a container sit there instead. The right-of-way permits the city does issue cover utility work such as pavement cuts and excavation, not containers. In practice, plan on a spot on the property.
One more step catches people out. Every contractor working in The Colony has to be registered with the city first, and a homeowner acting as their own general contractor has to register as well. The city explains both forms on its contractor registration page, and there is no fee for the homeowner version.
For placement questions, call The Colony Public Works and Utilities Department at 972-624-3129, or see its department listing. Building Inspections, which handles contractor registration and the adopted codes, answers at 972-624-3100. If you are unsure which office you need, your account manager will find the right contact for you.
The container itself is the bigger question here. City rules say any roll-off, front-load, or other container used to collect, hold, or move construction and demolition waste in The Colony has to be one owned and operated by the city's franchise holder, and that wording was tightened in July 2025. Every property in the city is also required to use and pay for garbage service provided by the city or its designee. Your Prime Dumpster account manager checks how that applies to your job before anything is scheduled.
Before you book, confirm with the city that a container can be placed for your job at your address. Rules differ from city to city and they change. Your Prime Dumpster account manager will help you check, and will tell you plainly what your options are here.
