Buena Park was originally home to the Gabrieleno and Juaneño peoples who lived in the area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. In 1833, Juan Pacifico Ontiveros received a land grant from Mexico that included much of Buena Park. Afterward, pioneers began arriving in droves and founded the small agricultural community known as “Plaza de la Brea” (which translates to “Tar Pit Square”).
