Portable Toilet Rentals in San Diego, California

Every range assumes a standard three day rental, which is how a weekend event is normally booked. One Saturday rarely costs much less, because delivery and pickup are the same two runs.

California adds a line most states do not. The state requires a washing station alongside your toilets on a job site, and San Diego requires public handwashing at events on top of whatever the County asks of your food vendors. Budget for sinks, not just stalls.

Construction orders run on four week cycles with a weekly cleaning visit. Over a long build in this city, a unit is one of the smaller numbers on the job.

Site access does the rest. A flat pad with truck room is simple. A unit on a canyon lot, down a tight alley in an older neighborhood, behind a secured gate at the border or out on sand takes longer, and an event unit needs a drip pan under it before it can sit near a curb. Your account manager prices the site along with the units.

How Many Porta Potties Do I Need in San Diego, CA?

California sets real numbers for job sites, and San Diego sets its own rules for events.

  • Job sites: Cal/OSHA's construction orders call for a minimum of one separate toilet facility for each 20 employees or fraction of 20, of each sex, with toilets making up at least half the facilities. Fewer than five workers means one single-user all-gender unit is enough. A crew that moves around and can reach nearby restrooms is exempt.
  • Washing stations: California also requires one washing station per 20 workers or fraction of 20, stocked with water, soap and single-use towels, placed so anyone using a toilet can wash right away. With a chemical toilet, the sink sits outside the unit, not attached to it, with a sign saying the water is for washing.
  • Events: The City sets the count from your estimated peak attendance and recommends going above the minimum. For guest comfort we plan 1 unit per 50 people over four hours, with 15 to 20 percent more when alcohol is served.
  • Accessible units: San Diego requires 10 percent of event restrooms and sinks to be accessible, on ground with no more than a 2 percent cross-slope, with an accessible route to each one. A single unit in a location has to be the accessible one. Federal rules set a 5 percent floor and exempt crew-only construction units, so the City's figure is the one to plan to.

Our porta potty calculator gives a quick starting number, then your account manager can reconcile it with the state and City rules.

Which Porta Potty Is Right for Your Project in San Diego, CA?

Pick by who uses the unit and where it stands. All of them are on our porta potty options page.

The Standard Porta Potty is the everyday unit, with a toilet, urinal, paper holder and sanitizer. Framing crews, grading jobs and small gatherings all use it.

The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty has a wide door, a flat entry, grab bars and turning room. San Diego wants these at 10 percent of your event order, so plan them in from the start.

The Deluxe Flushing Porta Potty flushes and holds odor down, a clear step up for a wedding, a sponsor area or a ticketed event.

The Deluxe Porta Potty with Sink puts a sink, soap and mirror inside the stall, which helps where space along a street or a park path is tight.

The Solar Porta Potty powers its light and fan from the sun, good for a canyon lot, a remote grading site or a dawn race start.

The Handwashing Station is a free-standing sink with fresh water, soap and towels. California and the City both ask for these, and one belongs at every food area.

The Restroom Trailer holds several stalls with running water and climate control, which suits weddings, corporate events and long-running sites.

Tell your account manager about the crew or the crowd and they will build the mix.

Do I Need a Permit for a Porta Potty in San Diego, CA?

A unit on private ground, including a fenced job site, needs no City permit. The public right-of-way and public events are different.

Streets, sidewalks and easements: The City's Right-of-Way Permit covers construction and above-ground or underground improvements in the public right-of-way, which the City describes as the area outside your private property lines. It also covers encroachment into a public or private utility easement. Development Services is the place to start before you put anything at the curb.

Public events: The San Diego Municipal Code requires a special event permit application no later than 60 days before your event date, and the City accepts one as early as two years out. Your application has to name the number and location of your portable sanitation facilities, and the Office of Special Events coordinates the review with every department that has a stake. Coastal events may also need California Coastal Commission review.

Food vendors: Serving, selling, sampling or giving away food or drinks at a public event means a Temporary Food Facility Sponsor Permit from the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health, and each vendor needs a vendor permit of their own. Handwashing sinks are part of those requirements, and the City is explicit that public handwashing stations at your event are counted separately from the County's food sinks.

Stormwater: San Diego treats a portable restroom as a possible pollutant source. Standard units need secondary containment, normally a plastic pan underneath, so a leak cannot reach a gutter or a drain inlet. Accessible units use sandbags or berms instead so the entry stays usable. Keep units at least 50 feet from storm drain inlets.

If you are unsure which office covers your block, your account manager has the contacts and can get you pointed right before the truck is scheduled.

Porta Potty Placement and Servicing in San Diego, CA

Pick firm, level ground with a clear approach for the truck. San Diego's hills and canyon edges mean a lot of sites slope, and an event unit has to sit flat enough to meet the City's cross-slope limit. Watch alley widths in the older neighborhoods, overhanging trees and parking restrictions.

Keep units clear of food service, drinking water and storm inlets, with the 50 foot setback in mind. On a job site, place them within a short walk of the work and make sure the washing station is next to the toilet so a worker can use both. At an event, spread units along the footprint and put the accessible ones on level, firm routes.

A standard rental includes one cleaning visit a week. The driver pumps the tank, washes and sanitizes the inside, and restocks paper and sanitizer. Festivals, big crews and warm weeks are worth adding visits to.

Disposal is doubly licensed here. Hauled liquid waste may reach the public sewer only with written authorization from the City's Industrial Wastewater Control Program, and any trucker discharging portable toilet waste needs a trucked domestic waste permit renewed every year. That application has to include the hauler's Sewage Hauler Operating Permit from the County Department of Environmental Health and Quality, with the County's list of approved trucks. Each pump-out is logged on a voucher naming the gallons, the waste type and the pickup address, and the waste has to have come from inside San Diego County.

Your account manager can set the service rhythm and confirm where your loads go.

How Fast Can You Get a Porta Potty in San Diego, CA?

Most San Diego orders arrive within 24 to 48 hours. Three to five days of notice lets us hold the exact units you want. For a summer beach event, a race weekend or a fall wedding, book several weeks out, and allow 60 days if you need a City special event permit.

These steps keep delivery day smooth:

  • Give us peak attendance. The City sizes event restrooms from the peak, not the total through the day.
  • Order the sinks too. California requires a washing station per 20 workers, and the City requires public ones at events.
  • Level the pad. Event units have to stand on ground with almost no cross-slope.
  • File the permit first. A special event permit is due 60 days out, so start there before you order.
  • Ask for drip pans. Standard units near a curb or drain need secondary containment; your account manager confirms how that is handled for your site.

San Diego, CA Porta Potty Questions

How much does a porta potty rental cost in San Diego, CA?

A standard unit averages $199–$349 and an accessible unit averages $200–$300. Deluxe units run $300–$400, a handwashing station is $150–$250, and restroom trailers start at $1,500. Those ranges assume a standard three day rental. California's required washing stations are a separate line, and your account manager prices the whole order.

How many porta potties do I need for a party or event?

San Diego sets event counts from peak attendance and recommends exceeding the minimum. We plan 1 unit per 50 guests over four hours, plus 15 to 20 percent more with alcohol. Add public handwashing stations, which the City counts separately from food vendor sinks, and make 10 percent of the order accessible.

How many porta potties does a construction site need?

California is stricter than the federal rule. Cal/OSHA wants one separate toilet facility for each 20 workers or part of 20, of each sex, with toilets at least half the total. Under five workers, one all-gender unit is enough. Add a washing station per 20 workers. Your account manager will size it to your crew.

How often do porta potties get cleaned?

Weekly service is standard, and each visit pumps the tank, cleans and sanitizes the interior, and restocks paper and sanitizer. Public events, large crews and warm stretches usually need more. Your account manager can set a heavier schedule for a busy period and then bring it back down.

Do I need a permit to put a porta potty on my property?

No. A unit on your own yard, driveway or fenced job site in San Diego needs no City permit. Approval comes in once a unit sits in the public right-of-way, a public easement or an event footprint, and an event permit is due 60 days ahead. Your account manager can check your address first.

What is the difference between a standard and an ADA porta potty?

A standard unit is one narrow stall. An accessible unit is wider, with a level entry, grab bars and room for a wheelchair to turn. San Diego wants 10 percent of event units accessible, on nearly level ground with an accessible route. Units used only by a construction crew are exempt from that rule.

How much is a porta potty for a weekend?

A weekend matches the standard three day rental our ranges assume. A standard unit averages $199–$349, a deluxe flushing unit averages $300–$400, and a handwashing station is $150–$250. A Friday drop with a Monday pickup normally fits. Your account manager will confirm the window and the final price.
