Normal construction and household debris is welcome. The limits come from Florida law, from the county's gate rules, and from what the city will not collect at the curb.
Florida keeps four things out of disposal statewide: lead-acid and vehicle batteries, used oil, whole tires, and yard trash at lined landfills unless the site is set up to take it. The state also makes it illegal to put rechargeable batteries, or products containing them, in the trash, and that rule reaches businesses as well as households.
Polk County refuses more at its own facilities: bulk liquids, drums of liquid, pressurized tanks, ammunition and explosives, biological waste, asbestos, and radioactive material. Asbestos is the one that catches older Haines City houses out, so test before you demolish.
The city's own curbside service will not take construction and demolition debris, batteries, corrosive or flammable waste, large quantities of fluorescent tubes, PCB materials, tanks, vehicles, or auto parts. Stumps and tree trunks are refused with yard waste, and residents get only four tires a year.
