Ordinary construction and household debris is fine. Illinois is strict about four categories, and the duty falls on whoever fills the container, not just on the company that hauls it.
Yard waste is the one people get wrong most often. State law says no person may knowingly mix landscape waste intended for landfill disposal with other municipal waste, or put it in a container bound for a landfill unless the container itself is biodegradable. Grass, leaves, and brush have to go through the City's separate yard waste collection instead.
Tires are next. State law bars knowingly mixing any used or waste tire, whole or cut, with municipal waste, and bars landfills from accepting them for final disposal. Large appliances, which the state calls white goods, cannot be collected for landfilling until their refrigerant, mercury switches, and old capacitors have been taken out by someone qualified to do it. Car batteries are flatly barred from the trash.
Beyond those, the usual exclusions apply: hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos never belong in a roll-off container. Most of what leaves Crest Hill in a container is buried in Will County. The County owns Prairie View Landfill, the large facility south of Joliet on the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant land, and a private company runs it under contract with the County.
