Everyday remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from Illinois law and from what the receiving landfill is allowed to bury.
Illinois banned whole tires from landfills years ago, so they have to go to a permitted tire recycler instead of into a container.
Electronics are the bigger one here. Illinois bans covered electronic devices from landfills, and from the start of 2026 the full list applies to households, businesses, schools and government alike. That covers televisions, monitors, computers, tablets, printers, scanners, fax machines, keyboards, mice, cable and satellite receivers, DVD players, music players and home audio gear. One old television in a full container can hold up the whole load, so pull them out first.
Illinois also keeps landscape waste out of landfills, which is why Oak Forest runs a separate yard waste collection from April through November and asks for branches cut to three or four feet with no dirt or rock mixed in.
Hazardous material is out everywhere: paint, solvents, fuel, motor oil, car batteries, pesticides, pool chemicals and asbestos. If an item has you unsure, ask your account manager before it goes in.
