Normal construction and household debris is welcome: framing, drywall, plaster, lath, roofing, flooring, cabinets, doors, carpet and cleanout junk.
Hazardous material is not. Paint, solvents, thinners, fuels, motor oil, pesticides and pool chemicals all stay out, along with asbestos, free liquids and pressurized cylinders. Elgin houses from the plaster era are also the houses most likely to hide asbestos in old floor tile and pipe wrap, so test before you swing a hammer.
Electronics have their own route in Elgin and must not go in the container. The city publishes a separate household hazardous waste and electronics page for residents, and that is where televisions, monitors and computers belong.
Tires, large appliances and anything holding refrigerant need to be named at booking so they can be handled separately rather than discovered at the scale.
Where an item is borderline, one call to your account manager settles it before the container leaves the hauler's yard.
