On private property, in your driveway or on the construction pad, Darien asks for no placement permit, and the City publishes no dumpster permit of any kind. Its forms and permits list runs to decks, hot tubs, solar panels, lawn sprinklers, car chargers and the like, with nothing for a container.
Public ground is handled through the City's construction permit instead. Darien makes it unlawful to proceed with any construction, alteration, excavation, maintenance or repair within a public street or alley right-of-way without first securing a permit from the City, with the Supervisor of Public Works directing the work and the City Engineer inspecting it. That rule is written around excavation rather than around containers, so the practical step is to ask the City about your specific spot rather than assume either way. The Community Development Department takes documents in person at 1702 Plainfield Road, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Permit and inspection questions go to 630-353-8115, and the City's main line is 630-852-5000. Start from the City's forms and permits page.
There is also a parkway rule worth knowing. Material may be put on a Darien parkway only to let a licensed collector remove it, containers may go out no more than 24 hours before the service and have to come back within 24 hours after, and outside that window it is unlawful to leave such containers anywhere between the front of the building and the street.
The collection rules are the part that matters most here. Nobody may run a waste collection business in Darien without a permit from the City Clerk, and that permit covers collection from every kind of property, residential, commercial or manufacturing. The City then limits those permits by number: one top-tier permit, which may also carry the exclusive residential curbside franchise, and no more than five of the second class. The second class is separately barred from single family homes and attached single family homes. That combination is unusual and it genuinely affects what can be arranged at a given address, so your account manager will check yours and give you a straight answer.
