Most construction and household debris is welcome. Illinois sets the hard limits and they are easy to remember.
The state has banned four groups of items from landfills. Yard and landscape waste has been out since 1990. Whole tires have been out since 1994, and your tire retailer has to take back as many as you buy. Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, ranges, water heaters, air conditioners, and humidifiers cannot go to a landfill until their mercury switches, refrigerant, and PCB-bearing parts are removed. Car and truck batteries are barred too, and electronics have been out of Illinois landfills since 2012.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, used motor oil, and asbestos are never allowed. Medical waste has its own route.
Two city habits are worth copying. Drain anything wet before it goes in, and make sure ashes or hot material are fully out first.
Worth knowing: Illinois holds the person who generated the waste responsible if it is dumped improperly, and the state tells generators to use a licensed hauler and keep the receipt. That is exactly what we document for you. Ask your account manager about any item you are unsure of.
