Bloomington runs its own Solid Waste Program through Public Works, and it has a drop-off point for program customers at the Citizen Convenience Center, 402 S. East Street, Bloomington, IL 61701, on the corner of East and Jackson just south of the public library. It is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and Saturday from 7 to 10:45 a.m. and again from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. It closes on Sunday and Monday, on municipal holidays, and for the whole of January, February, and March. Call Public Works on 309-434-2220 to check an item.
What that site takes has changed, and the change is the reason many projects here need a container. The city confirms that concrete, rock, shingles, and brick are no longer accepted there. The site now handles leaves, brush, garden trimmings, appliances, empty propane tanks with the valves off, and grass clippings.
Construction and demolition loads leave the city for regional disposal sites, where they are weighed and billed by the ton. City rules require licensed haulers to dispose of material only as the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency permits, and never in a public place inside the city. Electronics have their own route at the Town of Normal's self-service drop-off, which is open to McLean County residents but not to businesses.
Your account manager confirms where your load is headed and explains the disposal charges before the container arrives.
