Lumber, drywall, plaster, shingles, flooring, cabinets, furniture, and household junk are all normal container loads. The limits here come from Illinois disposal law and from the facility that receives your load.
Illinois has banned several everyday items from landfills outright. Yard and landscape waste, used tires, lead acid car batteries, and motor oil are all banned from Illinois landfills, as are large appliances that still have their mercury switches, refrigerant gas, or similar components in place. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency lists refrigerators, freezers, ranges, water heaters, air conditioners, and humidifiers in that appliance group.
Keep televisions, computers, and monitors out as well, and route them through Lake County's electronics recycling program instead of the container.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos never belong in a standard container. The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County runs household chemical waste and electronics collections for county residents and answers on 847-377-4950.
One more thing worth knowing: Illinois EPA warns that whoever generates the waste can be held responsible if it ends up dumped illegally, and advises keeping your disposal receipt. That's a good reason to use a licensed hauler and ask where the load is going, which is a question your account manager will answer before delivery.
