Ordinary construction and household debris is fine. The list that catches people out here comes from the landfill rather than from the City.
The Brea landfill refuses chemically treated wood waste outright and names railroad ties, telephone poles, and lumber for fencing, decking, and playground equipment as examples. A fence tear-out or a deck removal in Brea therefore cannot go to the local site, and that needs to be sorted before the container arrives, not at the gate.
Tires are no longer accepted at any Orange County landfill at all. Asbestos, batteries, brake linings, chemicals, fuel tanks, mufflers, paints, poisons, pesticides, fuels, explosives, heavy metals, medical waste, and radioactive material are all refused as well.
Two more refusals matter on wet or dusty work: contaminated soil, and liquid waste at 50 percent moisture or more. Nuisance dust is on the refusal list too.
California keeps household hazardous material out of the trash statewide, which covers paint, solvents, used oil and filters, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, electronics, and fluorescent tubes. Brea's own code adds that liquids must be drained before anything goes in a container and that flammable, explosive, or radioactive material is removed at the owner's expense instead.
When in doubt, describe the item to your account manager. At this landfill one refused material can turn a whole load away.
