Most household junk and building debris can go in your container. California's statewide rules set the main limits.
California bans a long list of items from the trash. It includes all batteries, fluorescent tubes, oil-based paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, and tires. Electronics such as TVs, computers, and phones are banned too, along with propane tanks and items that contain mercury.
Asbestos and chemically treated wood also stay out of a regular load. The transfer station takes only non-friable asbestos, and only when it's packaged by its rules. Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster either.
The Humboldt Waste Management Authority runs a household hazardous waste facility at the same Hawthorne Street site. It's open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
