Most remodel and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from California's statewide rules and from local disposal sites.
CalRecycle, the state recycling agency, says it's illegal to put hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or on the ground. Its list of items banned from the trash includes all kinds of batteries and fluorescent bulbs, pesticides and other garden chemicals, paint and solvents, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, and electronic devices. Tires are banned from the trash too, and lumber treated with chemical preservatives must be handled as hazardous waste.
Asbestos, fuel, liquids, and propane tanks can't go in a standard dumpster either. San Mateo County runs free drop-off appointments for county residents. You can bring up to 10 gallons of liquids or 50 pounds of solids per visit, and you can book as many visits as you need. Call 650-372-6200 to schedule.
If you're unsure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in.
