Most household and construction debris is fine for a dumpster. California's trash rules and the landfills' own limits set the boundaries.
CalRecycle keeps a list of items banned from the trash across the state. It includes every kind of battery, fluorescent tubes and LED bulbs, latex and oil-based paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, motor oil, and tires. TVs, monitors, computers, and printers are on the list as well, along with mercury thermostats and propane tanks.
Two items trip up a lot of remodels. Asbestos can show up in older roofing, flooring, siding, and cement, and wood treated with chemical preservatives has to be managed as hazardous waste. Neither one belongs in a standard dumpster.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and solvents stay out too. Miramar Landfill requires that TVs, appliances, electronic waste, and household hazardous materials be removed before a load comes through its gates.
Ask your account manager about any item you're unsure of before it goes in.
